Funky old suit

I recently purchased a '50s vintage suit off of eBay. It arrived in good condition, but with a problem. It smelled of old funk. Imagine an old basement or attic - a deep-seated, musty funk.

I brought it to the dry cleaners, and they initially balked at cleaning it. However, in the end they did - but it did nothing for the smell. The only thing is I have a pressed, good-looking but only slightly-less malodorous suit.

Any suggestions? I would dearly love to hang it in the sunshine for a day - but I live in the middle of London and I'm leaving the day after tomorrow for 2 weeks abroad!

In the meantime, I've taken my revenge about the fitness-obsessed eejit here at work who hangs his sweaty clothing in our communal closet here at work. I've nestled my funk-impregnated suit amongst his belongings in our closet.

That'll teach him to stink up the joint with his dirty ol' trainers.

Try spraying liberally with Febreeze and leave it to hang for a while - outside for the rest of today and all day tomorrow will be a good start, and you could leave it hanging indoors while you're away. I Febreeze'd an old wool overcoat which had been in my loft for several years and had become musty. I left it to hang in my garage for a few days and it was fine.

Thanks Salv for the advice... Febreeze? Hmmm... I'll ask Mrs. Matei to pick some up while she is out and about.

I thought that the dry cleaning would've done the trick - but I admin that I don't know all that much about the process.

I got the spelling wrong - it's actually Febreze (without a double 'e' in the middle) and apparently it lifts out odours, rather than just masking them. The UK website doesn't have very much info, concentrating on a new anti-allergen spray, but the US website shows the full range of sprays.

It worked well for me but, don't forget, YMMV...

Try some steam (like a hot, steamy bathroom) first then a dowsing in something pleasant smelling, followed by a darned good hanging-out-the-window, or alternate fresh air source. It has worked for me but vintage leather funk is more stubborn...

Febreze should do the trick, but it will take more than one liberal application. I purchased a fez online and it arrived smelling like several ashtrays. The smell did go away after several sprayings and being outdoors.
