Hmmm . . . Seems like only 58 or 59 years ago my parents came home with a boxey little metal record player with a thick pole in the middle, and a stack of little clear yellow plastic records with a 1 1/4 " hole in the middle. Only one speed, 45 rpm. Songs included "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", and another with Fran Allison (of Kukla, Fran and Ollie fame) singing "Here Comes Peter Cottontail". We played them till they wouldn't play any more.
In later years it was the Sock Hop after the Friday night basketball game, a boxey metal record player, a big ugly wooden speaker, and a stack of 45's being treated like frisbees.

Cool, thanks for the heads-up vitanola.

Although, everything I've found on the net says that the anniversary of the 45 isn't until the 31st of March.

But, I'd take your date over internet news any day - you know much more about records than reporters do.

The 45 was announced to the public and demonstrated to the trade in January of '49. First public sales were in March, as it took some time for the new records and equipment to trickle through the distribution system.
