They make good shoes, you'll love it.
My b-grade Edward boots from Grant Stone in rust kangaroo arrived earlier.

As usual, they’re basically flawless. Not yet sure why they are b-grades.

The kangaroo is lovely and supple.

I hate kilties. Just make the boots look fat and ugly. And realistically almost no one needs for our use cases.
They protect a boots tongue from being worn into by the laces, especially when using a particularly durable lace which can be more prone to doing this.
They can also add a tad bit of thickness to the tongue and help snug up a fit just a little.
I can understand not liking the look ( I don't like dress boots or cap toes ), but most people can actually benefit from them at least to some degree.

I have used many leather and cotton laces. Believe I had paracord too. I have never seen a hint of them 'wearing into' a tongue. Discolor/imprint yes. That's what the tongue is for. On PNW boots you often have a folded tongue which is already several layers of leather in that area.

Snugging up is better fixed by buying boots that fit, or wearing thicker socks.

Unless you use these for laces, I don't see how they can wear through the tongue...

Plenty of boots have a much thinner softer leather for the tongue.
And as far as snugging up the fit, sometimes you just don't know how certain brands will exactly fit and whether it's summer or the toebox isn't particularly roomy you may not be able to get away with thicker socks. It's not going to do alot, but it can offer just enough for some people and some boots in some situations.

Not through but definitely into, especially with certain makes that use a thinner leather for the tongue.
Even if it's not really wearing the tongue, with some boots that have that thinner tongue one can sometimes feel the laces on the top of their foot.
Kilties do have multiple practical purposes are aren't only for looks, that's all I'm saying.

Btw those wire saws were originally built into laces used by OSS & SOE operatives during the war, and you can still get such laces today.
I wouldn't use them even of I didn't hate those mostly useless wire saws but they exist.
