Subtitled: the New Millennium gender-benders the 1950s.

I know there are some guys here, like Senator Jack and Feraud, who dig those cool atomic-flecked sportscoats and suits of 1950s. It's a shame you can't find that fabric today and have something made, right? I mean, they just don't make that wild cross-hatch fleck wool anymore, do they?

Well, yesterday I said hello to a neighbour on her way to work, and she was wearing a skirt that looked as though it had been made out of one of Elvis' or Jerry Lee's original 50s jackets - black with a bold white fleck in it. I complimented her on it and asked if it was new. It was, she informed me; she only purchased it a couple of weeks ago at Myers.

Womenswear gets the goods again.

About 5 years ago, I accompanied my wife through a store called Katies while she was hunting up some new clothes for winter. Lo and behold, hanging on the wall was a womens' replica of the famed 1950s bubble-pattern shirt - I nearly fell over backwards! It was even the same colours as the one shown in Steinberg & Dooners' book Fabulous Fifties: Designs For Modern Living: purple with a pink circle/bubble pattern on the front.

Then came saddle stitiching. Try getting a tailor to saddle stitch your shirt or drape pants for you. They all whinge about it being doneby machine in the old days, so it can;t be done now. Why, then, has every season for the last four or five years featured womens jackets and shirts with saddle stitching? Some one must have those machines stashed away somewhere!

I'm going to pout and stamp my feet and say I want to be able to go to a tailor and order in some fabric for a sportscoat in some wild atomic flecked patterns. I want to be able to buy cool shirts too, and have saddle stitching on my clothes again if I want it. Failing that, I'm taking up cross-dressing!*
Ladies get all the cool patterns and fabrics these days!
