Flat/folded and tied shower "cap"?

The opening scene of "Summer Stock" shows Judy Garland with her hair protected from her shower by what appears to be a red and white striped piece of shiny plastic, folded and tied like a bandanna to cover her hair:

I've never seen one of these before. Does anyone have any other sources for them or know anything about how common they were?

Just from what I can see, to me it looks based off any number of turbans. Since I can't see the back, I can't know for sure. Usually I'm good at eyeballing and figuring things out.
