Five Star Leather Jackets

I just received this email early this morning. I’ve since replied, but I think the time differences mean they’re probably done for the day so I might not hear anything back until late tonight; anyone else able to shed any light on this? I set my armholes at 21” and my biceps at 15” (I’ve seen a number of you set to something similar — 21” and 16” bicep seems fairly common, if memory serves). I’m too new and inexperienced to quite follow what they’re asking: what are they meaning by “variation” and what measurement are they wanting to change to 19 or 19.5” (are they talking about making the armhole smaller than 21”)? Or are they talking about making my biceps 19”? Cause that’s WAAAAAAY too big.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Five Star Waldo Pepper in premium goat. My jacket is labelled 44 I would not want the shoulder opening any smaller. It fits but is snug. My next jacket I increased both shoulder and arm measurements

Hello all,

This thread inspired me pull the trigger on a 5* Rough Wear Model with custom sizing in Horsehide. Let me tell you I had a great experience. The amount of customization that is available is impressive and unmatched (to my knowledge) at the price point they offer. You can have any sizing, stitching, cuff and leather type/color you want on any jacket. The customer service is superb, I had a lot of questions and all of them were answered in a timely manner. It took 24 hours for my jacket to get built and 6 days to arrive to my house. This is a great company that delivers great quality jackets at an extremely affordable price and it truly deserves more recognition.

Back to jacket I bought their Rough Wear model in Black 1.2mm Horsehide/Pull Up Brown Accents with Beige Stitching, Cognic Cotton Lining, Tan Talon Repro Zipper and Mid Brown Cuffs. The sizing was based off a Buzz Rickson RW with only a quarter of an inch wider and longer because my chest and back are too restricted on the Buzz Rickson. The sizing was made to the T from arm holes to sleeve girth. I want to mention made an honest mistake on the sizing of the hem. I measured an old stretched out jacket and 5* made the measurements with a new ribbing making the jacket about 3 inches wider in the hem when stretched out. It makes it look baggy in the back Nevertheless I don’t mind it at all, it gives a boxy fit and I will taper 3 inches off the back in the future when I change out the cuffs.

My only complaint about 5* leather is the leather. The leather is too soft/supple that the jacket’s collar and body has a hard time holding its shape due to this. The finish on the jacket feels a little like plastic and the Pull Up Brown leather I received does not have the pull effect at all. With that said this is a low priced jacket and I put the jacket to the test, it’s breathable, water resistant, durable and most of all at a guilt free. I have an Aero Leather Jacket, a Buzz Rickson, a Schott, I have some from Banana Republic and Levi’s. I have them hanged and stored away from the elements only to see the light of day on special occasions. But this 5* star leather jacket will abused and that’s what they were meant for!

It's a soft and almost naked feeling leather....with a gray core. Very thick and quite soft.
Exactly as Ton describes it.
The last few months it has been too warm here for jackets and to that extent the jacket still looks like it did in the spring.
But the 2mm HH is no longer available at 5*. For this now 2 mm Steer. If that is the same, a perfect choice.
I had considered a café racer out of it, but am now taking a break in terms of new leather jackets. Too much sports equipment purchased and budget consumed. Lol.

Jacket arrived today, two weeks to the day from placing the order. It’s damn near perfect, IMO. There are a couple of minor measurements they didn’t quite hit, but by and large I think where they landed was actually an improvement. If I had any nitpicks it’d be that my specifications were for 15” biceps and they made them 16”, but it’s a barely negligible difference and, in all honesty, it’s just going to make it a bit easier if I wanted to throw a sweatshirt on underneath. The seal brown steerhide feels durable yet supple, has some decent character (to my unsophisticated eye), and smells amazing. Thanks to @ton312 and @MrProper for your thorough documentation and knowledge — I also implemented some of your adjustments.

I was nervous something was going to go awry, but I’m overwhelmingly pleased. I remember someone early on in this thread saying something like “5* will make you a jacket that is 85% of the quality of a high end jacket at 20% of the price” but from my experience, I’d say it’s 95% the quality — and it’s custom. BUT, you do also have to put in the work: be very meticulous with your measurements; give them everything. I supplied a 5 page PDF with everything I could think of listed and diagramed. And now that the groundwork is laid, I can simply use it again when I inevitably order something else.

Cool.
Very well done, and on the first try. Congratulations.

Hello all,
Has anybody had the issue of having the their Five Star A2 collar being too floppy? I’m looking to stiffen it to remove that annoying wrinkle on the left side. Does anybody have some suggestions or any experience, sharing would be greatly appreciated!

You’d have to ask the new owner. That jacket flew my coop some time ago. I have no doubt it looks the same though. Dyed straight through and a very robust hide.

Hello,

@ton312 why you sold it ? Did not liked the fit?

@morrison2951 do you have a few pics with the jacket pls?

How is the leather compared to Badalassi black steer? Is it squaeky and shiny ?

Thanks.

It fit ok. There were certain aspects of the design I did not care for. Handwarmers were too far to the side and the side panels themselves were too small for it to fit like an actual Halfbelt.
