I’m thinking about getting an FC Eric as my next jacket. Love the idea of the thick 2mm HH. Any advice or tips from those who have previously purchased? This will be my first from FC so new to the brand. Any info appreciated.

Well, to immediately ruin everything, according to just about anyone who had seen this jacket, the leather isn't 2mm thick. Probably a bit of info that got lost in translation. 2oz would be more likely, though the jacket is thicker than that.

Fully agree with @Monitor, i have never owned a FC but have handled a few in shops, the leather is definitely not 2mm thick.
They are nice jackets but what i tried on never made me want to take my wallet out.
If the reason your are into FC is the 2mm claim you are going to be disappointed.

What is it that you're after? What are the benefits of having a jacket made out of 2mm thick hh?

I’m probably after something different more or less. 2mm is thick yes, but I prefer thicker leathers. 1.3 is ok, but if there is something around that is thicker these certainly catch my eye and are preferable.

I’ve not had a super thick jacket yet but it’s something that interests me.

As the leather gets thicker does it not just make it less practical. More uncomfortable to wear and only really suitable for cold weather. I see photos of jackets that are able to stand up by themselves, I take it they are less than 2mm, surely even thicker than that must be like wearing a floor board. I have half a dozen leather jackets and the one that gets the most use over the full year whether out walking, shopping, or in pubs is a light lamb skin.

I’d be keen to know the difference between 1.3mm and 2mm if anyone has these.

The answer is that it would depend on the leather. There is a lot of variety in HH. It depends on how it has been tanned and finished really.

Would be best if you told us what you are looking for. Do you want your jacket to feel like stiff set of armour when new?

That's very subjective. I for instance simply can't wear light lambskin and would rather pick a massively heavy leather over anything light any day of the week and twice on Sunday. While I agree they're not always most practical and sometimes do take some time to become truly comfortable, I have never found either of my heavy jackets a bounder to wear in the slightest sense & I feel much better wearing such jackets than anything else.

Thick leather doesn't make much difference in cold leather for me, either.

@JacketFit08, if you love your leather jackets heavy, absolutely go for it. 1.3mm is what you'd call very heavy and that's pretty much the thickest leather that you can count to find. There's heavier out there, of course but let's say that 1.3-1.5 mm is the zenith of what most, if not all makers will use to make you a jacket.

2mm is an overkill by any definition and honestly, I don't think anyone works in a leather this thick.

Completely agreed on heavier jackets... I personally find that lambskin jackets in general lack presence. When I am wearing leather, I want to feel I am wearing it.
And if a jacket is well designed, it will feel confortable whether in heavy or light leather. So yes, always on the heavier side for me as well.

Yep, I absolutely believe this but I just meant, not one maker comes with a guarantee they'll deliver a 2mm hide. Heck, you could go through 20 Vanson's to get one that's actually as massively heavy as you often hear people describe the brand. It happens of course, my first Natal jacket was closer to 3mm, but it's best to not to expect it 'cause chances are, you're in for a disappointment.

Agreed, you can ask small makers to use the heaviest hide they have, but there will still be a lot of variablitly in a single jacket.

If you want to try a heavier thicker leather, there’s Lost Worlds right off the bat. Secondarily theirs Vanson get it made in their Competition Weight. If you’re going custom you can message Aero and ask them to use their thickest leather. Langlitz and Cal have some heavy options but you’ll have quite the up charge from them to use it. If you’ve never had a thick ass leather theres always going cheaper and getting used/vintage Vanson CWs, Lost Worlds or finding the really thick Star Glove/Cal jackets.

Getting a custom jacket with the style, fit and features you want in a heavy 1.5mm leather of your choice for nearly half the price of an FCL > Off the rack FCL that isn’t really 2mm.

I think a simple Aero Premier 30s HB in CXL with zip sleeves would do the trick. Or Vanson could do the slim-fit Enfield with a larger collar in a hefty hide. Johnson Leathers made a phenomenal jacket for @Jin431 recently. Depending on where you live, there are quite a few great options.
