This looks pretty cool. I feel like I should know more about Montgomery Ward, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. Leather looks very grainy, the collar seems to be a bit dirty.

Montgomery Ward was a retailer in the United States, much like Sears or JC Pennies. Jackets likley will be of similar quality level as the Sears-brands. This jacket appears to be similar to an "Excelled" brand jacket.

Hey all. First post here on this forum :)

I just won this auction last night and was a bit stunned at the price. Seemed a bit too good to be true for a NWT TFH cafe racer in the color and size I wanted. Oh well heres to hoping it isn't! TFH has long been my favorite brand and when they shuttered and restructured I was nervous I wouldn't be able to get one of their jackets since I haven't seen confirmation if they're going to continue making them or not. ~81k yen.

Opinions please! Is there a magic date before which Excelled jackets made in the US were "superior?" I searched the forum and see there are a number of threads associated with Excelled. Am trying to save an hour of hunting for the answer, if there is one. Thank you!

Looks awesome. Just make sure that your lady (I am assuming, perhaps presumptuously, that the jacket is not for you) will like thick leather - there were just recently a couple of posts stating that significant others did not care for thick, heavy leather at all.

Thanks! It would be for me. :) I like heavy-duty jackets. My main squeeze right now is a Vanson cafe racer that squeaks when I move, but I've been on the hunt for cross-zip.

I have stayed away from this particular label. I have owned Sears Leather Shop, which are around the same time, late 60/early 70s? All the catalog jackets declined during this time. There are some interesting design though.

Montgomery Ward used Windward on their label up till the change to the Brent name. There are transitional labels with both Brent and Windward. I see the Brent change coming in around 1958-1960. Montgomery Ward had quite a variety of labels through the years.

I will work on a label history post for the Catalog jackets I have; Sears, JC Penney, Montgomery Ward.

I don't think there was a time when they were superior. They are a mixed bag when it comes to quality. I've always thought of them as lower priced readily available jacket. I would assume that their Horsehide labeled jacket were the top of their line. Very few show up. I've owned a HH cross zip and a HH sport jacket. They were made to a cost, lower grade materials all around. The fit on the Sport jacket was excellent.

Very likely there are many out there that swear by their Excelled. They typically don't bring much money, so can be a great buy I suppose.

Thanks TM. Yes, I have limited my Montgomery purchases to only Windward or Brent labels. The Brents can be had for relative steals.

I’m pretty sure Wards used this particular label, or some derivative of it, into the 80s.

That RMC Herkules is perfect but I cba with the struggle of ordering from a platform yet unknown to me from overseas. Someone should grab it though at that price. If it ends up not fitting, just pm me.
