Finding a Foldaway...

A while back, I bought a Christy's Foldaway Fedora with the red storage tube & was not pleased with the crown height of the hat or the brim width.
I ordered the brim to 2 5/8" all the way around but still didn't care for that extremely low crown. I think they took more crown to give me more brim...

I have decided to experiment with my Caribou Pinnacle that I got from a Lounger & made it a TAR.

I have had it in the tube for over 24 hours & it folded out acceptably.
I have refolded & going back in for another 24 hours, careful to not fold the exact same way.
I'll post some photos later this weekend of unfolding round 2...

Tom that should work. But I think folding the same way gives the hat a 'unique' look.
[as long as the folds are not pressed really tight]
Remember the hat Josh had in Texas?
The folding gave it a really cool look.

By the way I have folded my MooreLite from the Major several times.
He is also working on a foldable fedora that I hope will fit the bill for the ones that can use a hat such as this.

I do want to add that I left the liner in the Pinnacle.
Most all other foldables I have seen are liner-less.
This Pin is nice felt & the thin 2-ply ribbon is only held by the Stetson pin shown in the photo.
It fits nicely in the Christy's red tube as well.
Stay tuned & thanks for the posts...

I'll be following your experiment, GTD. It's a great idea.
Me too. Even a 3 or 4 day trip seems to require so much hauling of stuff from the house and loading the vehicle, that by the time I get to what hat or hats to take along, very little room (or will) is left, so I wind up stuffing an abused straw behind the seat. Then we get where we're going and i wish to heck I'd brought a decent felt. But adding a hatbox to the pile? Not going to happen, I now know from experience.

So, a tubular hat is desired.

A little longer that planned...

Here are some photos of the Pinnacle coming out of the tube after quite a few days rolled up...

It takes some smoothing of the main "fold" areas but I'm happy with how the brim & the crown look.
Still undecided if I'll leave the liner in or not...

I think that looks great, Tom!! I love what you have done with it. Is the felt fairly lightweight? Liners look good in my opinion, but most foldables just use a tip sticker. I would think the liner would prohibit the hat from rolling as tight as it could. I also like the look of that center crease line going down the crown. It gives the hat an "optimo crown" touch.

Good job Tom!
Taking a cue from you , I am trying one of my MooreLites as a foldable.
I have folded it a few times but have not left it that way for a extended time period.
I will use the Cristys case I recieved from a very good friend. [by the way thanks again!]
My hat has no liner, and I have really tried to 'center' the fold.
We will see after a few days.
