Filson Mackinaw Cruiser

I want to buy a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser. I’m 6’3” and 195 lbs. What size should I get? They look like they run very large. My chest is usually between 41 and 42, and my shoulders are around 19 inches.

If you want to layer it then go with a large. I just bought the hooded version and the sleeves are a bit long which would cover your height difference between us as I am 5'9" and weigh 190lbs. I usually wear either a 42 or 44 as I am in between the 2 sizes. They are great for cold days with a bit of wind but if the temp drops a nice sweater or or patagonia fleece will be necessary.

I was thrown off by the chest measurements they say medium is 48 inches in the chest

I have a 42-43 inch chest and bought a medium, which is a size down from their suggested sizing and it was still pretty roomy. It worked as an overcoat, which is the intended purpose, but I find that when outside and active I just don‘t need to layer that much, so would prefer a trimmer fit personally, for my relatively slim body type. A large would have been comical. I loved the construction of the jacket and its heritage, but after mulling it over sold it on with tags still intact. I have an old Swanndri jacket from New Zealand that has been my go-to for the outdoors in colder weather and I realised I was satisfied with that.

I don't blame you. The Filsons of today are nothing like the Filsons of yesterday. The old Filson cruisers are about 30 oz. wool, and the new cruisers are about 22 oz. But at 50% off, I ,too, would have jumped.

I try to buy vintage clothes where I can, but sometimes it's easier to buy new. It’s always a pain to find vintage clothes that fit.

@Peacoat I might see if I can find a Monarch Cruiser Mackinaw from the 40s and cancel the Filson order. Do you think the Monarch would be closer to the quality of the old Filson?

I'm not familiar with Monarch, but it should be thicker than the current offerings from Filson. They are more like a thick shirt than the Mackinaw of old.

You don't even have to go back that far. I have a hunting coat, brand name escapes me, from the 60s or 70s that has the 30 oz shell. It puts my Filson to shame.

Edit Note: My hunting coat is a Woolrich, late 1960s model.

I see. I ended up sticking with the Filson since the Monarch was too small for me, 17.5 inches in the shoulder.

I would have suggested looking for a 50's-60's Woolrich 503 on Ebay, you can find good condition examples from $50-$150 all the time on ebay.
Since you bought the Filson though, on sale that's the only time a modern example will be worth it and I bet you'll be happy with it for layering.

I have a couple Filson Mackinaws and a few Filson double Mackinaws. While it is true that the new ones are lighter than the old ones they are still quite warm and still well made in Seattle.
I keep an eye on what Filson is putting out year round but I typically only buy during the winter sale. I have lusted after their wool packer coat for years now but I can not bring myself to drop that kind of money on a wool jacket.

Well actually, I just bought a vintage cruiser in cobalt blue, and I am going to cancel the Filson order. Oopsy.

I'm not well versed in Filson, but I'll bet this one is old enough to be better than the current options to some degree if not significantly.


It's just a shame that they've shifted to becoming a mere fashion brand lowering quality/ substance and significantly raising prices while switching to imported wool.
They're not even using Pendleton wool on their cruisers anymore.

Fashion brand my ass, I was out for an hour and a half walking in the snow at 24 degrees and no problem whatsoever.
It may be lighter but it damn sure works great! I got back to the condo and was completely dry.

Old plaid ones were thicker wool, over 30oz, then down to 26oz, still thicker than the 24oz plain woven wool which now is even lighter I think. Jac shirts are awesome too, don't over look those, they're lighter weight wool but much nicer grade, wool fabric may still be from Pendleton, you've gotta ask their customer service. Alaska fit size 40 is 24" P2P, edit size 40 is 22.5” P2P, but the sleeves are short, 24" length. So you will need long sizes. You can size down if you can find long sizes in smaller sizes. They are cut to give a bit of room, here is my forestry cloth cruiser, in long size, becomes a bit long for me in the torso but you're taller dude so definitely go for the longer size because of the sleeves,
