Felt hats for the summer

I remember reading once about a specific felt fedora that was no-longer in production. I believe it was lightweight and vented near the ribbon but didn't look like it was. If i remember right, it was supposed to be a very good and well-sought after hat. I think I remember seeing the vintage ads for it at one point even.

Would anyone happen to know what i'm talking about?


Also, other recommendations for summer felt fedoras would be fantastic. All i have right now is a stetson Saxon, which I've loved during the winter, but is a bit much for the summer with the liner.

I'm not sure what you may have seen. Many of the now-defunct manufacturers turned out lightweights and most custom hatters these days will make something in lightweight felt. I have four vintage lightweights, a '50s-'60s Borsalino, a Mallory Dallas, an unlined Stetson Playboy, and a Dobbs Twenty lightweight, all dating from the late '40s-early '50s. I have a lightweight, unlined hat on order from Art Fawcett at Vintage Silhouettes. Art has turned out quite a few vented hats for members of the Lounge.

If you look around this site for awhile you'll see all manner of lightweight felt hats.

I find my Olney crushable fur felt fine for hot weather (unlined and a cloth band). I don't know about US stockists but Tails and the Unexpected in Wales sells them fairly cheaply. Vintage hat wise, Dunn & Co in the the UK produced a lot of unlined lightweight hats with a group of fine ventilation holes in the crown that aren't visible unless you closely inspect the hat.
