Fedoras on film

You know, after digesting old movies and TV shows I came to the conclusion that back in the day men wore fedoras more often than not without suits. From the 30s to the 50s guys in all sorts of more casual and work-related wear had fedoras on. It wasn't just the suit wearers that carried on the tradition.

Anyhow just rambling and wondered if others have noticed? It makes a case for us today that we can wear one with more casual wear and not only with suits.:fedora:

Of a similar note, I notice in old TV and movies, guys wear suits more often than I see any possible need to. If I wore a suit in this day and age for no particular reason, I'd be stopped at every street corner by someone asking, "What's the occasion?"

Here's hoping the everyday suit for a 21 year-old loafer becomes socially acceptable within the next couple weeks.

But until then I'll wear my fedora with casual clothing.

But I only wear my vintage fedora if I have a collared shirt.

Work hats

I was pleased to see quite a few old pictures of foresters wearing fedoras and other hats. They were in a centenial photo exhibit of my school a few weeks ago. Hats were not universally worn, but hat wearers wore them while doing just about everything. Foresters and wildlife biologists don't tend to be a formal lot.

Wearing fedoras made sense- they offer protection to the wearer. Cheap ballcaps-especially when worn backwards- look goofy and make no sense at all.

I'll never understand why hats went out of style.

I just saw Inside Man today, and Denzel Washington wears a straw fedora with a helluva lot of style. Good movie, too.

Doh! Yeah, I want a straw like that one for the summer. Was watching 3 Stooges couple weeks ago and a truck driver had a fedora. Saw some documentary footage that had guys with vests, slacks, no ties, sleeves rolled up and fedoras. Actually more fedoras seen without suits I guess.

They say Kennedy screwed it up when he went around bare headed it ended the fashion and I pretty much agree remembering those times.:(

There are photos around showing Kennedy on his way to the Inaugural Ball. He wore a top hat. I looked at these photos and came to a "stunning" conclusion: John F. Kennedy looked rotten in a hat. By the time he was president, he just didn't have the mug for one. (Maybe in his younger days, the situation was different.) If I'd looked like JFK, I wouldn't have worn a fedora either.

Here's a good example of that, some of my relatives in the late 30's.
Wow, ranchers and not a single cowboy hat.
