Fedora vs Federation

Hello again,
I think that I will buy an Akubra Federation for the next winter.
As the Fedora I my best hat I would like a comparison.
If somebody has a Fedora (or a Stylemaster) and a Federation I would be very interested in a picture with the two hats together.

Thanks
J.M.

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions about the two hats, I'll try to answer them, as I've worn both extensively.

Hey, nice photos, Spellflower.

I had a similar question that I asked here:

It may be of help as well. I own an Akubra Federation in Carbon Grey and while it's a great hat, it's... massive. I'm actually selling it. I have a Sydney on the way.

Instead of selling it do what several other members have done and take some scissors and trim a 1/4 inch off the brim. Makes a big difference. Bob.

It's not a bad idea, but it's a bad idea for me to do it myself; my small motor skills are about as accurate as a blind archer's arrow. Who wants to do it for me in the Philadelphia area in exchange for beer?

I was on the verge of trimming my Fed, but then I decided to give it one more chance. I rebashed it into the center dent in the photos, and now it's my new favorite hat! I can't guarantee anything, but I'd be willing to rebash yours for beer, Dumbjaw!

Wow Spellflower many thanks for these wonderfull pictures.:eusa_clap :eusa_clap
This federation is really a beautifull hat but I'm not sure that it's easy to wear. The brim is so big that the fedora's seems small.

Anyway I think I will order one in spetember.

Thanks again

I thought it was too big for a long time too, Achille, but I found that with the right bash (I prefer the center dent, as it narrows it out in the front) and a nice tilt, as in my avatar,) I feel quite comfortable in it. Yes, it still gets "Indy" and "cowboy" comments from time to time, but then I got the former while wearing the Fedora, and the latter mostly come from 13 year olds in my neighborhood who want me to know that I'm on their turf. It's not the easiest hat to wear, but it is possible. And of course, you could always trim it if it still feels too big. I don't know where else you'll find a hat of its quality and crown height sold open crown for as good a price.

By the way, if you or anyone else buy the "tawny fawn" version and decide that it's just not going to work, PM me before you go to ebay with it!

The Fed is one of the largest out there because it has the wide brim and the tall crown. It scares a lot of people at first, but I think it reflects the fact that hats are smaller affairs these days. Yet, I get more compliments on them than any other hats (I have several Feds), and I have gotten used to thier size over time. Each of mine seems to have it's own personality, and it took time for me to find the right bash for each one. My advice is, wear the heck out of it - shopping, in the rain, in the snow, whatever. Play with the bash whenever you get the inclination. Then, after a year or so, it'll probably need a reblock to take the taper out of it and knock it back into shape; ship it off for a reblock and get the brim trimmed if you haven't "grown into it" by then. If nothing else, you'll have a heck of work hat.
