Favorite haunts

First of all I'd like to welcome you to my inaugural post, and let me tell you I'm just delighted to be here!

I'm sure most of you have heard of The Edison in LA. A thing of beauty, eh? Apotheke in NYC is another amazing example of design. The look is somewhat earlier than the Golden Era, but I can't imagine most of you would mind, especially after seeing it. If any of you have been to Walt Disney World I'm sure you can vouch along with me for the headtrip that is MGM Studios, and while I wasn't old enough to go as a kid, the now defunct Adventurer's Club on Pleasure Island looked amazing, and right up some of your guys' alley!

I haven't been to any of the clubs, but maybe some of you have and would care to share your experiences? Have you got anything to add to this modest list? Any favorite clubs, bars, hotels, cafes, or other haunts that let you escape from the modern world?

I live in a pretty historic little town, so i'm a little spoiled i guess. One of my favourite places is Simon the Pieman tea rooms which is housed in a quaint tudor building by the church, we tend to stop by on our way home at least once a week my son and I. It hasn't changed much inside decor-wise since the year dot, open fire, horse brasses on the wall, that kind of thing, home-made traditional tea and cakes served in a nice, unpretentious manner. They seem to have weathered the storm of change and remained a constant, which i find comforting. It hasn't changed since i was a child and indeed my Mother remembers it as being the same, since she visited on a day-trip from London when she was young.

When i worked in London I always enjoyed popping into the Savoy for a drink, but they have refurbished it and i haven't the heart to see what a meal they may have made of it.

That sounds fantastic Sofia! I'd love to go to a nice little tearoom around here but most I've found are either excessively modern and pretentious, or far too feminine and floral for me to feel comfortable. It isn't even worth looking for a cafe anymore either as they've all been run out by Starbucks and the other overpriced chain-coffeehouses. Whatever is left is usually packed with hipster types, and the prices are never much better than the big names.

I suppose I'll just have to have my tea in my own little world on the front porch

Although I enjoy going to unique local places, to check out the food and atmosphere, I will go out of my way to take a meal at Trader Vic's



The ones in Vegas and Dallas have closed

Whenever I'm in New Orleans I always stop by "jean lafitte's blacksmith shop" for a drink. In Key West I like to stop at the "Hog's Breath Saloon". Going to Vegas next week and I will surely stop by "Casa Fuente" in Caesars Palace for a nice cigar and a mojito....or 2. Lots of character (atmosphere) in these places.....lots of characters in there as well.
