No, not the wall posters that have been heavily advertised on TV (though I have yet to make a connection between the name and the product.)

What I'm interested in is whether anyone has experienced a change of hat size while gaining or losing weight. I think Matt D. mentioned somewhere about having to sell some hats when he lost weight as they were now too large, but couldn't find the thread using Google.

The reason I ask is that during most of my time in the service I wore (in AF headgear) a 7 1/8. When I started buying hats about a year ago I initially bought hats in that size, but found they were too small. I put it down to having a bit more hair as I now go longer between haircuts, but I've gained additional weight and now some of my 7 1/4 hats don't fit as well as they used to, and 7 3/8 hats fit better. Add to that when I visited Art he was surprised when I said I wore a 7 1/4; he thought I would take a larger hat and his measurement seemed to confirm that.

So, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this? The one other thread with a similar title from about a year and a half ago only garnered one answer so I thought I'd give it a try again.

If nothing else it's one more measurement to track when I do get serious about weight loss again. :D If hat size does indeed fluctuate with weight it would be another incentive to lose it so I can continue to wear my favorite hats!:D

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Tom,
I was just mentioning that same thought in the thread/poll about being a Pumpkin Head/Golden Orb/Pinhead. I've put on weight, way/weigh to much, and while last year I was a 7 1/2 (and I believe a 7 3/8 in the Army, the extra tonnage has added girth to my already swollen melon!
So yes...I agree...If I knew that I be a 7 3/8 again if I lost enough weight...I'd go into starvation mode, and start buying some of those sweet lids in those smaller sizes!:D :D :D

.

Tom, a dozen or so years ago I was about 35 lbs heavier than now. I had a baseball cap adjusted to fit at that time in the trunk of my car.

I hadn't worn it since I lost weight, and it was about 2 sizes too large. I had to adjust it in 2 clicks on the plastic band in the back. I also found an old metal band watch that I hadn't worn since I was heavier, and it was too large also.

I lost 30 and then gained some of it back all without any appreciable difference ...

I have to add or take away the foam tape that came with my new Akubra's every now and then ... but it's more about keeping my hair trimmed rather than letting it get wiley.

I think it mostly depends on whether your body accumulates fat in the forehead region. I don't, from what I can determine by feel. I seem to get it all in the cheeks and jowls.

Maybe some medical types can chime in?

My hat size fluctuates depending on my winter and summer time haircuts. I have to put in some foam spacers when I get those summer buzz cuts and my hat size drops about 1/8".

I joined the Army right out of high school, and was measured as a 7 1/4 back then, and that size seemed to last through my twenties (I went through a fitted baseball cap phase during that time).

I stopped buying fitted caps or hats of any type for years, and only recently got back into it. I'm now a 7 3/8, and it has nothing to do with hair length. I had a buzz when I was measured in the Army, and I shave my head now.

It probably has something to do with weight. I weighed 175 to 180 lbs. from my teens through my early thirties, and I'm now about 187 at age 39.

My dad lost about 80 pounds over the last year and a half, and dropped from a large 7-1/4 to a solid 7-1/8. None of his hats from his heavier days come close to fitting him, and this has nothing to do with hair, he's bald.

I for one feel much better now. I always thought my wife was being derogatory towards me when she called me a 'fathead'. Now I realize that she was just referring to why certain hats don't fit me.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Dinerman, that sounds like me--I've gained about 90 pounds and apparently at least one full size plus a bit, it seems. Guess it's time to add my hats to the list of reasons I need to do something about my weight! (Much more important than things like health and such, eh? lol )

Cheers,
Tom

When I think of all those incredible hats in small sizes
on OFAS... I'm off to get liposuction on my head immediately!

I'm with you, feltfan! lol

I wonder if I was where I should be weight-wise and my face wasn't quite so round if I'd be able to pull off wearing a stingy brim better than I do now? That would open up the range of nice hats I could wear, too! ;)

Regards,
Tom

Definitely! I've dropped and gained anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds a couple of times over the last 3 years and each time my hat size changes accordingly!

I believe when you lose weight it statrts in your face/head and moves down from there.

Hopefully you're on the way down.

Good luck,

Church
