I just check out a featurette on Yahoo movies and it looks like
Ben Grimm aka The Thing is going to be sporting a fedora in the upcoming
Fantastic Four movie.

It looks like Marvel likes having their characters dress nice, first Doc Ock, now this.

Any guesses as to what kind it might be?

Well, one thing for sure is that it would have to be very BIG to fit on the Thing's head.
Looks like it has a bound edge. Sort of reminds me of the Whippets of the 1950s. I can't see the top of it but the hat looks like it has two forward dents though not too deep. Probably a custom because no off the rack hat that I know of looks like that.

Regards to all,

J

That's a hell of a building he's in...those are elevators behind him. Talk about deco architecture!

Is that a movie still, or just a random behind the scenes shot?

Why the downturned back brim, is what I would ask. The character needs some style and the turned down back makes him seem dumpy. C'mon, an action hero needs a nice profile dash (sic) to it. That is no dash!

Who is designing the fedora look for some of these characters? Doc Ock needed a much better hat stylist as well. Marvel, I'm available for 15 minutes work for a $20k retainer. :cool2:

I don't know the character, but might he be trying to hide his hideous visage?

Well I know the bulk of the film was being shot in Vancouver, Canada so there is a good chance that tthe building ext and that interior is downtown somewhere.

The clip is from Yahoo movies Fantastic Four Featurette
(Run down to your local comic book store to learn more)

Hmmm, and CanaDave, let us know how that turns out.....

Would you say that Clark Gable looks dumpy as well? I think if it is done right, it can look very classy. Have an open mind to it.

Hi root:

I've asked this before....where do you get these killer vintage photos! Nicely done yet again.

But... a personal preference, for sure nothing objectively valid....but I do in fact think Gable looks dumpy with that turned down back brim. He might as well wear a pith helmet. You need to turn that back up, baby to get the dash!

I'm with you gc, it's nothing I've ever cared for either. I'm anxious to see this movie, I remember reading the comics of it when I was a kid.

The featurette says it's the Baxter Building, so if anyone is familar with Vancouver, maybe they've heard of it.

Mmmmm, the Baxter Building is the name of the fictictous (sp) headquarters of the Fantastic Four (that means it doesn't really exist! ;) )

(The Dash!)

Well one must understand the style of the early 30's to truly appreciate the completely turned down brim. Now, I do agree that it does look dumpy on most fedoras. However, take a really tall shorter brimmed reverse tapered crowned fedora, I say, that looks quite nice! But, a shallow 40's or 50's crown with the turned down brim looks like, well I can't say it here but, you get the idea. ;)

I think Gable, Cagney and many more men of film could really carry that look. But, it's something that I find appealing for a truly early look. On a daily basis, I wear my fedoras like you said with the back brim up. That's how I like to wear them. But, when I have an early or mid 30's suit on, got to go with a nice tall crowned light colored fedora brim down! I have been told I look like a movie star when I have done that! I like that!!!

Here is a photo of Gary Cooper that I think you'll like. This is a real early photo of him and he has no crown dents, but I think it looks really smooth with just the brim turned up in the back and all.

Enjoy!

Hi Root. Nice one again. You are right--Cooper there does NOT look dumpy! Though I would never wear a hat like that today--but then again, I am never dressing in period wear, which would call for the need for consistency across the overall suit and look. Can appreciate that for sure.

Nice pic again.

G
