Famous Hats in the News

Glenn Ford’s (1916-2006) 50X Stetson/Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors bought in 1965 for $108.10 just sold at auction Jan 26th, 2024 for $1045.50.
Did they even have a "50 X" hat like this in 1965? Nothing about that hat looks right for 1965........2005 perhaps.
As an aside one of his actress wives was from and lived here in my town until a few of years ago, Kathryn Hays (1934-2022).

In 1965 whether it was done in Stetson’s house or thru one of their outside contract vendors such as Stevens, I have no doubt they made it the equivalent of a $50 felt thru extra hand work for celebrities such as Nudie & Ford. Add the gold & silver buckle & keeper. There was no 50X production hat. By 1970/1971 when Stevens had acquired Stetson, Stevens was producing a 7X Fifty. I didn’t post it in my OP but the sale included a wooden Stetson box with a Nudie’s sticker.

As far as the style looking like it was from 2005 & not 1965, compare it to the post-1968 BR-20 & BR-30 from Resistol. They are the same style except for the gingerbread.

Based on the reputation of the auction company I would not question its authenticity or provenance.

Look at the sweat Jack.....it says "50X" with a bunch of X's and "Real X's". in 1965 Stetson was Stetson, Stephens did not buy them until 1971. Stetson did not contract out their felts.....ever.

The liner does not look right either..........

Did you look at the sweat (and liner) pictures you posted? Very modern......

Hat box looks modern too....absolutely no age to the wood or leather.

Did you mean to post those Resistol hats too?

2015....look familiar?

EDIT:
Here is the Glenn Ford Hat, while it could very well be from Glenn Ford, It certainly is not from 1965..... Mark, I never said Stetson. Contracted out their felts. They contracted out the making of their hats when labor problems developed with contract talks In Philadelphia in the early 1960’s.

Glenn Ford probably rarely handled the hat or box.

Not going to argue the point further. This is so silly I’ll just delete my original post.
