Unless the jacket's got a big pattern going on, I don't see why it wouldn't work. So long as the colors work together, go for it.

I've seen some period British photos showing that ensemble as well- somebody important, probably royalty of some sort....it looked good then, should now....

Ralph Lauren Purple Label

I can't find a picture with the jacket buttoned...but this gives you the idea. This is one of my favorite Ralph Lauren looks...could do without such a fat tie, though.

"Fair Isle" knits can be knitted in any of the neighboring Shetland Islands and still lay claim to authenticity. I have one knitted on the Island of Barra. Still a very cool garment.
Now as to the question, I'd say it all depends on the specific sweater and jacket. It's all a matter of proportion. How about a picture???
My sweater has a very high neck hole, compared to other sleeveless pullovers I own, which would, I'd guess, lend itself to looking OK with a double breasted jacket.

In terms of the overall look - yes, it should work grand, subject to above comments re patterns, etc. I'd be more concerned about practicality - in my experience, a good wool DB jacket is already on the warm side without the additional layer!
