Fabrics for vintage inspired clothes?

Particularly, I'm wondering what fabrics were used for vintage bathing suits, specifically in the first half of the 20th century, and even more specifically, the 40s and 50s. I don't think they used lycra, did they?

And I wonder about what fabrics were used for other things like dresses and pants, but I suppose maybe the same fabrics that are used now were used then?

I find it hard searching for this info, and thought maybe someone here might have the answer (possibly, Lauren?)

Sorry if this has been posted before. I havent found my answers yet

Did you read this interesting site?
http://www.fashion-era.com/swimwear.htm

Bathing suits were made out of cottons, stretch materials like Lastex, and satin materials as well. Many acted much like a foundation garment, and were quite firm :)

For regular clothing, cottons, rayons, silks, wools, etc. were all popular in various weaves, such as crepe, jersey, garbadine, and so forth.

I seem to recall a thread from way back that referenced where to find reproduction fabrics--let me see if I can find it again...

I have a vintage skirted bathing suit that is nude colored rayon bengaline with an overlay of black lace. Not stretchy, it does have elastic at the legs however.

It closes with a zipper and hooks and eyes, and is boned for shaping.

Wool jersey was common, but I photos of my great aunt and uncle at the beach, and some of their suits were woven materials.
