Fab 30s Donegal Colonel Hastings-Style Overcoat

I like those coats. 30s and 40s overcoats, by the way, are by far the easiest 30s/40s vintage to find in the UK.

Esslemont & Macintosh (Essie Mac's) - the Aberdeen seller of the second overcoat - closed earlier this year. It was running a profit, but apparently "not profitable enough". Goodbye to another golden era dept. store.

BK - I agree. You see more 30s and 40s heavy overcoats in charity chops than any other item from that era. What is happening around Aberdeen and Perth? I was looking forward to some tweed exploration in the area to coincide with a visit at the New Year, but a friend has told me that most of the ourfitters around the shooting estates have closed.

We've come to a pretty pass when small, going concerns have to go because they're not cash cows. One smells the heavy, antibacterially-soaped hand of big business and brand image and economics of scale.

Or maybe folks just wanted it gone. That's the way with old places and things sometimes.

This is the thing. E & M was not a small concern. It was a major store, taking up some pretty serious real estate on Union Street in Aberdeen. (I suspect that (like the University of Aberdeen has done) the owners of E & M have realised just how much they can make out of selling that real estate = Goodbye store.

Alan, i'm not sure what's going on. The borders is pretty similar. I reckon that there simply isn't enough business for the olde time gents outfitters to stay in business. Country pursuits ain't as popular as they once were, less people work on the land where they'd require the tweeds, young folk certainly aren't interested in spending time in the wild. All of this combines, i guess, to bring menswear to its current pass.

I don't understand it, either. The so-called 'new tweed' vendors (e.g. Orvis, Musto etc. ) aren't exactly selling their stuff cheaply, yet they seem to be taking over from the traditional manufacturers. I think its marketing and international presence. It's a pity, as I think a part of the magic of tweed is its local associations. Although most people associate tweed with Scotland and Ireland (onviously) it is surprising, looking back, to see how many indigenous tweed tailors there used to be.

Even in the industrial Midlands I used to be sandwiched between the 'Derby tweed' belt (there were a number of small manufacturers in that area) and Baronia (Hardings) in Nantwich. Now they are housing. See http://www.dabbersnantwich.me.uk/letter7.htm
Small scale, traditional, local businesses, making the same stuff they had for a hundred years. Now lamented and sadly missed. Somehow, 'multinational tweed' doesn't 'do it' for me. Just my opinion, of course.
