Is there such a thing as a suit that is durable, appropriate for everyday wear, not lined, and is machine washable while also remaining relatively inexpensive? I think something like that would be ideal to me. When I wear it I wont have to worry about dry cleaning or putting alot of effort into trying not to get it dirty.

Well, in the golden era, most men only had one or two suits... one for daily wear and one for church. The daily suit was a modest color, something that could work for their job. They would get a suit dry cleaned only when it started to get real smelly I'm sure... maybe once a week or something. The fabric back then was tough, it held up better then fabric today. I don't dry clean my clothes... only if they get spot or something on it because, each time one item is cleaned, it takes life off of the piece.

There are washable suits... they're made of a cotton type of blend I believe... they existed in the 20's and 40's, I don't know of any washable suits being made to day but, I know the old Palm Beach suits were washable mainly because they were summer wear and men wanted to keep them white by boiling them.

Today, men only wear suits for business... and they take their coats off when diving and such. Suits are flimsy overpriced articles of clothing today... in most department stores... not up to the task of being worn daily.

There's a movie about what might happen if someone should invent a suit that can't wear out or get dirty called-appropriately enough-"The Man In The White Suit"It stars Alec Guiness and was made in 1951. Sorry to be :eek:fftopic: but your discussion just reminded me of this film. Well, carry on. Which reminds me of another film...:p

Depending on your definition of 'relatively inexpensive', you may want to have a word with Indy Magnoli. Ask him about the 'Expedition Suit'.

Zach,
I was thinking the same thing. I have that suit. Here it is in a photo:

The pants are machine washable, but the jacket needs to be dry cleaned. I wear this thing all of the time. It's a great suit.

That suit sounded good, but I was tihnking of something of a different color and look. I've seen some suits at the mall that look more like a suit to wear around than just one for dress that's "flimsy". I'd imagine they're expensive. If I get a job soon or get a good amount of birthday money I may go looking for one. It'd be nice. I could wear it to school and just about where ever else ;)

You may have luck at J. Crew. I have a cotton suit from J Crew in blue and gray pin stripes. It looks like a banker suit, but it is light-weight cotton.

Check J Crew's factory store. They have interesting things from time to time and they inexpensive enough, you don't have to worry about them. -though, sadly, the quality is lacking because the clothes there are much flimsier versions of what is in the retail stores.
