Ever hear of her?

An incredibly mature performer even as a little child -- she was singing on local New York radio before she was five years old, and was a star on NBC at six. And as far as I know, she is the *only* 1920's-era radio star still living.

As you may know, Lizzie, there's another child star from those days who is still alive and kicking -- only Baby Peggy (Diana Serra Cary) was a star in silent movies, not on radio.

I attended a screening of one of her movies a couple of years back, and she was in attendance. She was still sharp as a tack and seemingly very healthy. She turns 90 later this year, which makes her five years older than even Rose Marie.

Anyone know that "Rose Marie" from The Dick Van Dyke show was known as "Baby Rose Marie" in the early 30's? Well, she sang with Fletcher Henderson in this beautiful song a friend posted on my Myspace page, it's a lousy clip really, just a bunch of clips of her and random images... but, the song is really special.

Enjoy.

Yes, I do remember as a kid watching the Dick Van Dyke show that my parent's discussed the singing career of Baby Rose Marie. As another coincidence MTM went to high school with my mother at Immaculate Heart, which is just around the corner from where FL member Marc Chevalier lives.

I like the songs in the You Tube clip. Thanks for posting.

"Baby Rose Marie -- The Child Wonder" did a Vitaphone short in 1929 that shows up on TCM from time to time, and is one of the extras included on the recent "Jazz Singer" DVD release -- it's a performance that's fascinating and unsettling, to see a six-year-old singing with such maturity.

Last time I saw her sing was on a Showtime of Gary Shandling's.
Before he did "The Larry Sanders Show", Shandling had an anniversary clip show of a fictional talk show he was supposed to have had. It had his first guest, Mr. Ed from the 1950s, Doug McClure when he was in "The Virginian" and Donnie Osmond. Now I'm getting to the point, he had "I'm a Little Bit Country, I'm a Little Bit Rock n Roll" sung by Donnie and Rose Marie.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

Somewhere around here I have a snap shot from 1945 of my dad dancing with Rose Marie. He worked on the leatherneck Magazinne, and when he and his buddies ran out of cash right before payday, they'd go to a nightclub and say they were thinking of doing an article about a "Marine on the Town" for the magazine. One was a writer, one a photographer, and my dad did layout. Usually there was no film in the camera ;) . This time they had film, but of course no article was forthcoming. The featured performer at the nightclub was Rose Marie. Fast forward to the mid 70's. Rose Marie, Rosemary Clooney, Margaret Whining and Helen O"Connell were touring as "4 Girls 4". They played at Chautauqua and my brother got Rose Marie's autograph on the picture. She looked at it with great amusement and said "Hey, Clooney! Look, it's me, SKINNY!" I'll look for the picture!
