Embroidered Initials

There are, I believe, two places on a shirt wear it is acceptable to have your initials: (1) on the cuff and (2) on the lefthand side, slightly below where the breast pocket would be. I understand the rationale behind the latter is that you won't see the initials when the suit jacket is worn.

In terms of my views on the subject, I have to ask what the point of having one's initials on one's shirts is. Vanity, some might say, but since when was a set of initials anything to boast about? We all have them! The other argument is for identifying one's shirts in the laundry or in squash club or gym changing room. All very well in 1925 when communal changing facilities were the norm and people left their clothes hanging on a peg in the changing room. However, now one usually puts one's belongings away in a locker. Besides, if you cannot identify the shirt you were wearing just an hour before exercising, you are clearly a fool! The laundry argument similarly does not hold water (no pun intended) - either you are washing your shirts at home, when the ability to identify your shirts out of the morass becomes redundant, or at a dry cleaners, who will be careful to identify your shirts by way of a tag. I personally have never had to identify my shirts out of a pile at the dry cleaners!

The only possible reason for anyone to have initials on their shirts, therefore, is to show off about the fact that they are tailored to his specifications. This, in my view, is crass: those whose opinions count will be able to tell from the cut and fit of the shirt and why would one bother to try and impress the rest? I say leave the initials off the shirt and go for the cleaner, more reserved look. It's the gentlemanly thing to do.

Custom shirts are all about: 1. The Collar, 2. The Collar, 3.The Collar ..........and then the fit.

All the other doodads are silliness.

Sadly, I now 'never' send my good leather pieces through baggage handling at airports, as I've had the experience of the leather being 'ripped' due to careless handling (they throw the stuff around like meatpackers), and sharp metal edges. It's a shame I can't take the risk now, so the leather is designated handluggage.
