The vendor has this listed as a 1930s waistcoat. The high opening, lapels and covered buttons would make me guess it is earlier: Edwardian or possibly Victorian? Any ideas, anyone?

Not really a style that interests me, but I know it's a popular look with some loungers.

OK. Its just that the combination of long points, front dart and narrow shoulders is unusual in an edwardian vest, although it did exist. Do you have some more detailed pictures?

Qirrel: As the expert in Victorian/Edwardian tailoring, would you therefore agree that the black waistcoat that started this thread is Edwardian? Or maybe earlier?

Yes. The lack of a front dart, high buttoning, and the small slightly rounded points are typical. The backing fabric is one I see more often in older garments (pre 1900), but that isn't definite. It would be easier to say with more detailed pictures. I'd say late victorian/edwardian.

I must learn to be more cautious.

I'm afraid it'll be impossible to date my one. It has been so buggered about by a wardrobe dept. - back and liners altered/changed, pocket liners changed, interior pocket added (why??) - that it's actually hard to tell what features of the linings are real and which aren't.

it was the style - particularly the piping - that made me think it early. I should know enough by now to know that those things are terrible indicators of age …
