Edge finishes

Ok, so we have raw edge, welted (Cavanaugh/ under/ upper/ double etc.) and bound.

1. Is this just ´bound´ too or has it a distinguishing name?

2. Are there any more solutions? Anything out of the box?

I would call it "stitched" - maybe "over-stitched", not to confuse it with the Stetson Playboy stitching. Some hats - like the Dobbs Gay Prince - also sport a whip stitching.

It is an amazing design hat but unfortunately has motch damage which sóó clashes with the immaculada essence of the hat.

I'd tend to call that a "chain stitch." I've seen a couple of Borsos with that brim edge treatment and I think I remember seeing a Churchill from the 60s with it, too.

I have also stumbled over delightfullly creative variations on the hatband-bound-around-the-edge theme.

The stiched edge theme is appearantly one which has become in disuse but had many variations. I am really looking forward to acquiring a cool italian one.

I like the Gay Prince whip-stitch, but I don't really like the stitchings shown here. They remind me too much of a zig-zag/overlock stitching. Stitchings like that are great to prevent unraveling, but I don't like them visible. To me they add no visual quality - on the contrary.

Hmm, I rather like that brim stitching, especially the one Vic posted where the colour of the thread matches the felt.

For me, the best brim treatment is the Cavanagh style felted edge.

Hmmmmm. So, maybe a "Pl-edge of abstinence" would mean a raw edge?

Sorry, but the "pl-edge" was the only edge-ending word I could think of at the moment. There're probably lots of them

The felted edge is somewhat finish specific. Interesting technique but limited IMO.

I get that. You are correct. A felted (Cavanaugh) edge should indeed not be heaped with welted even though it starts with a welt.

As too simple I don't agree nor about limited. There was a myriad of variations and it requires skill. I read that there was even a two tone variant!
It may not always be the most elegant but it is imo the ultimate edge finish for a felt hat as it is felted.

My point is that it works in certain cases. It has its time and place but is not the end all be all. It has definitely been pushed to epic levels on this forum (see 100% beaver felt, ect.).
