I was watching this auction when he first posted it

... he had a reserve of $600lol lol lol lol lol
I wrote him an
(admittedly provocative ) one line e-mail, it read "are you insane?" I received in reply a semi-coherant, rambling -" i not stop calling me insane, you ar insan" type reply. He then relisted it w/ a $200 reserve, I then saw he had finally relegated it to a regular auction... and NOW he tries to RENEGE???
IMHO this guy isn't playing w/ a full deck, eh?
BAD FAITH!!!

Well, I already sent a message back telling him that if he wanted more money then he should have set a reserve as he did in another of his auction. I won't spend another cent more and I would arrange for it to be picked up.
I am still waiting for a response. Especially after the beating he is getting from you fellas. :p We shall see I suppose. :D

Regards,

J

P.S. $600!? THIS GUY MUST REALLY BE SMOKING SOMETHING.

I saw that too. Local pick up only and 0 feedback - both warning signs. You should let Ebay know and see what can be done, but, for better or worse, caveat emptor.

I don't know if your able to pick-up the hat. Or, how badly you want it. I have noticed other sellers that use a pick-up only. However, he had no reserve and should honor that. If you decide its too big of a hastle to get it you can always give him negative feedback. At this point it would virtually ruin him, if you get my point. He would have a negative rating. Who would want to deal with him. And if he replied to the feedback, everyone could see he was missing most of his grey matter. You should contact ebay and explain the situation to them. I believe there is a live chat/help type feature.

What a hassle, JP! I'm so exacting in my Ebay ads, that I used to believe everyone else was the same. Now I read EVERY line and especially the shipping because that is where a lot of sellers are making their money. $15 to ship a pair of cufflinks? That's the sort of grifting I've come across lately. Good luck with the pick up.

Yes indeed it does. This guy's a nut case. The only hat I'd consider paying $600 on is a brand new Optimo 100% beaver, and even that would be a stretch. Can this guy even construct a sentence in English? -Mulceber

Done. This is really poor. I agree with prior post, he needs to be reported to eBay as well--they should make him stand behind his auction, just as they would expect a bidder to pay up for a winning bid.

I think the volley of emails is actually a softer approach to take at first before reporting him, and it's from real people instead of "The Machine". Thanks for jumping on board fellas. This is a good way to get educated quickly without suffering bad feedback, etc. It's peer pressure! It's how I used to lead in the Navy.

I sent a note, too. He should honor the winning bid.
But he was clear, if nutty, that he wouldn't ship.

One of the flaws of eBay is that there is no effective
mechanism for dealing with dishonorable sellers. But
public pressure is a good idea.

IMHO this guy has already provided more than adequate cause to call the whole thing off, if that was your inclination.
He has already breached his contract, I should think the option is yours at this point.
Nice hat & all, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't relish the thought of actually having to meet this meshugga madruke in order to get my hat...

Ha... when you look at the grammar and spelling -- and ethics -- it's hard not to wonder whether we're dealing with an infamous custom hatter...

You mean GH? Nah, that isn't him. I've seen his stuff. That's not his screen name, and whatever else you say about him he does grammatically correct English. -Mulceber

I was joking. (Although you have a much more tolerant definition of "proper English" than I do.)

breach of contract

As stated by many others, this is against ebay policy, period, and because it is
a legally binding contract, ebay considers this type of action extortion, and does investigate pretty thoroughly-I was the unfortunate victim of a carbon copy scam, and things turned out badly for Mr. Greedy; remember- it's just "stuff"-not worth some bad consequences. IMHO-next, please...

My interactions would begin with the phrase: "Because your auction is a legally binding contract and you are obligated to sell the hat to me at the auction price, we need to take that as a starting point."

He either ponies up or is reported to eBay. No options. If he requires pickup, then pay a messenger service (or sweet-talk a lounge member) to pick it up and ship it to you.

Yeah, I do so wish that I had kept that little piece of correspondence, but I chucked it, I am afraid my recollection fails to do justice to the true MORON-ATHON we've got going w/ this one!lol lol
