Pretty pissed off... just received what was advertised as an XL top hat with no dents size 7 1/2 with a circumference of 23 and 3/8 " and what I got was a top hat covered in dents and a size 7, with a 22" circumference. The bucket appears to be for a much larger hat.

Here's the listing:

I can understand making a slight error in measurement such that the sizing is a little off, but saying it is 4 sizes larger is basically fraud, especially when you do it on ebay where agressive bidders raise the price astronomically when they smell a rare size. Contacted seller, will open an investigation if it is not resolved quickly.

THat's a shame! It sure doesn't look dented in the auction photos. What size are you? I've got a fairly large topper that had no sweatband. I'm having a new sweat put in it, so it won't be original, but from a wearability standpoint is should actually be better than original, since I always fear ruining pristine 100 year old sweatbands by wearing them. I'll check the final size when i get it back from Henry the Hatter, but I suspect it will be >7 1/2

Really? That's awesome! I would likely be willing to purchase it from you if it is a silk plush/nutria/melusine topper and in good shape. I'll PM you and we can talk price etc. I have the same fear of wearing them to some extent, so a new sweatband would be great.

In other news, the seller has dug her heels in on shipping, so I opened a case to get it arbitrated. Given that she made 3 specific representations that proved to be false (23 3/8 size, 7 1/2 size, and no dents -she told me this last through a pm-), I think I have a pretty strong case for at least some of the shipping costs if not everything. I shouldn't have to be the one that pays for her negligence/fraudulent misrepresentation.

You will win. Send the hat back to the seller and open a "chargeback" case with your credit/debit card company. Your CC company will contact PayPal and get it to yank the purchase+shipping amount out of the seller's account. The money will be held 'in trust' while the case is being decided (for a few weeks). I can almost guarantee that you'll win ... and then the money will be deposited into your own PayPal account. In addition, the seller will be charged a $20 'chargeback fee' --really a fine-- by PayPal.

(Perhaps you should warn the seller in advance of all this, so that he/she can have one more chance to refund you.)

Thanks for the information, I will likely follow your advice once I've heard back from the seller wrt opening the case. I'm fairly sure I will win, but this gives me added security. I don't think i'm going to tell the seller until i've done it, because she has shown considerable bad faith up to this point and I don't want to give any possible advantage to her.

Just won a vintage Borsalino Alessandria on eBay with a best offer win. I paid a lot for it, but I always wanted one, and now this completes my small "collection"; I own two Stetson Stratoliners, a Stetson Open Road, a Lee Trinity, a Churchill, and now the Borsalino Alessandria.

Small is the new big... congratulations on the new addition to a well curated collection.

Thanks, guys. I luck out cause I have a small head; size 6 7/8 or 7. This was a 7 and really hope it fits great...I paid enough for it to! Anyway, excited about the Borsalino. Always wanted it in my collection and glad I own one now. Anxious to get it and wear it :)

Congrats Axl - an Alessandria is a wonderful thing.

I have one coming as well, but my investment was only about $50 so I'm not expecting perfection.

I have a gripe about Ebay: All of a sudden (starting maybe two weeks ago) there are dozens of beautiful hats available in my size. I mean ones that I could really see myself wearing. I lust after them all, and it causes me to be so woefully irresponsible!
I bid on this unbound homburg (possibly "Lord's hat?) twice before, and neither time was the reserve met.

Needless to say, when I saw the BIN I swear the mouse started clicking on its own.

yes all this week 7 1/8 which is what i wear as well is popping up on ebay. I know exactly what you mean. Because if i had the money, i'd be fighting for the hat you just bid on. I was staring at that one the other night going WOW. Same with about 4 other ones from fedoras, to bowlers, to homburgs. Luckily for my habit of buying hats, i am jobless. No need to fret on my behalf, its due to leaving for the Navy. But i agree bowlerman, the button just keeps getting clicked when you find something you want. My mother in law made a funny point one night. She said "Do you really need another hat, you have loads all ready, you only have one noggin." My reply "but who says i can't wear them all at the same time." She just laughed, it was a funny moment.
So Bowlerman for me, knowing theres 4 hats on ebay that make me go WOW, i need that one, i've learned i can't go there until i get money. Wish i did, its a good week on the Bay. Its like the ring in Lord of the rings " its mine, my precious." Sorry Gollum you can't shop at ebay till you get paid.

By the way i take it you won that bid, if so BEAUTIFUL, cant wait to see photos.
