I had never heard of an 8x Ultra Beaver either. Good thing the seller misread the sweatband and it's a 7xCB (I counted those x's three times!) Though judging by the liner this must be from the very, very end of production on that quality designation.

Open Road clone, and once I get lucky enough to end up with a western hat that can be shaped into the look that Randy and Bama keeps sporting I’m going to take another long break from beating the Bay bushes. No, really!

I’m afraid I maybe hard to help for the hat I’m wishing for. If the hat is absolutely perfect I’m willing to spend up to $125, or so...so too many times my low cost budget and high cost expectations cancel each other.
A natural or whitish 3 or seven x CB , or a wide brimmed, tall crowned Open Road clone is the elusive critter I’m hoping for.
I have an early fifties Knox Westlite that would fill the bill if I steam shaped it, but I really don’t want to mess with that one.
I’m partial to it’s original cattleman’s crease and brim shape.
I like how your and Bama ‘s westerns have a slight hike in the rear of the crown’s center crease and with the front pinch coming somewhat near, but not quite a cattleman’s crease. And your brims have a certain character that I’d like to imitate, as well.
Bravo to you two for serving up a look having wide appeal.
In two days, or so, I may be able to satisfy this HAS disease myself. There’s one on the Bay that is perfect and so far no one else has made a bid, but I already know that don’t mean diddly. I can hope, though.

Nice ebay find. Those happen sometimes. I found my 50s RD OR at a thrift shop for $12. I've had some good luck on Facebook market including my Beaver 100.

That's a nice one Randall. I have been lucky on Ebay, occassionally of course, and have scored some vintage Stetson's. It is definitely a hit or miss, plus I'm pretty peculiar on the condition.

Hard to call this one a defeat at $119, but I kept staring at it trying to figure what didn’t look right. No liner, but stars on the sweat crest - but the crest is not heavily embossed and the threads look modern. 7 1/4. $50 price tag. I kept looking and looking...something was missing.

I pulled the trigger.

Then it hit me. No Clear Beaver

I sure wish Stetson embossed model names like that! Looks very 30's or earlier. Not much info on The Superior Hat Co. other than oblique references in The American Hatter. But this looks like it's in very good condition for its age.

Here's a Denver Dry Goods ad I saved from the Lounge with their generic iteration of The Dakota model. Funny how differently copyright worked back then ("a perfect copy of Stetson's Carlsbad shape...")

Nice Jared, I had it on my watch list despite it being small for me. Campaign ribbon and what looks like a kettle curl. Hats like this are my current obsession.
