Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

This showed up and after less than one hour it had double digit watchers. It was cheap and had the “make an offer” option. I made a lowball offer and it was immediately accepted.

Burton Taylor was a line made by Mallory and ceased to exist after the 1947 Stetson merger.

No interior photos. No idea of the size. One in a thousand that it will fit me so look for it here in the classifieds...perhaps a trade?

Nice find! Hope it fits you Brent.

I've tossed out bids on a couple of hats this week that I have no idea the size on. I figure if nothing else they can be trades, future sales or wall hangers.

I just bought this on ebay.
I saw Steven @mayserwegener post an Anton Peschel the other day. I said I would put it on my list, and found one. I hope it is a good one. If not, I was the only bidder, and it cost $20.00.
The ribbon seems to be in the front. Can that be right?

No, the seller is un-educated into anything hat. He just snapped the back of the brim down. You could wear it this way, but I'm afraid what the posts about it would be.

That's what I thought, but the other side of the brim seems shorter in the picture. Probably the angle it was taken in, or the optical effect of bending the back "elongates" it.
Hahaha

Probably about a 2" brim as per this time period. I would guess the German trends followed the American resurgence from 1955-1959. Steve would know more.

You’re right, Max, in that it could be a result of optical distortion. However, it may also be that the brim is a “dimensional” brim, where the width is cut a teeny tiny bit more narrow in back, at least. See the thread on this topic for more dirt!!

Just scored a Dalton hat box - woohoo!

Bob Hufford shared a link to an auction of boxes a few weeks ago, and one of them was a tall Dalton box. I inquired of the auction about shipping costs, but received no reply, so held off bidding. Lo and behold, I'm cruising the Bay in the wee hours this morning and saw the same box listed with a BIN of $20 w/ free shipping. I tossed out a $15 offer to chum the waters and by the time I got to work this morning, they had countered with $17.50. So I took it.

Hell, I woulda paid the $20!

Max, It was made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl (Bavaria) and probably late 1950s to mid 1960s. As mentioned it's a Back Bow so the bow should be at the back when worn. The Velour should be very nice for being later.

German of uncertain manufacture. Steve @mayserwegener helped, but until it arrives I won’t know for certain.

It was definitely made by VEB Vereinigte HutWerke Guben or Gubener Hüte GmbH. They were the same factory but privatized after unification. Gubener Hüte GmbH lasted to the late 1990s. All Guben (East Germany) Hat Companies were combined as VEB Vereinigte HutWerke Guben post WWII. Guben was the largest hat making center (many hat factories) in Germany up to WWII.

Thanks, Steve. I’m continuously in awe of your encyclopedic knowledge of European hats.

Brent, Thanks! I am pretty much focused on the German and Austrian Hat Industries. It will be interesting to see if your hat has a paper label or something that will let us know if it was later VEB Vereinigte HutWerke Guben or Gubener Hüte GmbH.

I have purchased 6 hats on ebay this last 60 days, 4 were winners. The other 2 were "not as described" and I was able to return for a full refund. Today comes the 3rd "loser". The first picture shows the listed hat, the other photos show what arrived. I paid $135 for this hat, they shoved it into a box too small so it arrived crushed and it was riddled with moth bites. The photos were all a bit low quality and the photos of the underside of the brim were cut off so you could not see the full brim or any moth damage. The liner and sweat band were otherwise excellent :(

This is what was described:

BEAUTIFUL Vintage 50’s MALLORY ARISTOCRAT QUALITY “THE DALLAS”, Grayish-Green 7 1/8 Fantastic condition. The pictures tell the story.

I once had a guy sell me a hat and it showed up with over 30!!! serious moth bites, some clear through the felt near the crown ribbon and sweat band.

Once he had it back and saw all the damage, he apologized saying he didn't know how that one got by him, asked me to update my review of him... and then blocked ME from bidding on his hats. Complete @sshat, that one.
