I was outbid on a Stetson Gun Club (Dune in Acorn) that I really wanted but someone else wanted it more. I consoled myself with a brown Borsalino Genova where I was the only bidder.

The new in the box Gun Club I was outbid on:

My consolation Borsalino:

Took the sting out of losing the Stetson.

Well, I was excited to get my first bowler, a quite old Stetson with an air vent in the top and a super cool sweatband. It was advertised as a "Size 7-1/2." I don't think so...

I've asked to return this one. Darn it. Now I'm bummed out.

Not so great luck with these last 2 ebay finds. My gray, gorgeous Cavanagh Homburg is nice but has a very off-putting odor along the lines of stale cigar smoke and moldy mothballs. Ugh.

Sorry it turned out that way, but "The hat measures out at 7 1/2", but I could be off + or - 1/4" was a pretty good indication that more information was needed from this seller. He should take the return.

Sorry about the outcome man. Thats not fun. However, I am sure you can find a buyer here on the lounge. Just post it up in the classifieds.

I asked and was told: "As near as I can measure, front to rear is 7 3/8" - side to side is 6 1/4". Hope this helps."

Maybe he thought a 7-1/2 length measurement meant size 7-1/2. Sorry it didn't work for you @Tukwila -- a derby/bowler is on my wish list too.

Now on to the Cavanagh Homburg... I have never encountered an odor so strong or one that smells quite like this. It's really odd, like maybe some smoking in there mixed with mildew or moth balls or???? I put it in the back room last night with the window open for some fresh air therapy and it didn't help at all.

In fact, after I closed the window and then returned to the room a few hours later, even the room started to smell bad. I set the hat on the arm of the couch next to me and it was on the verge of making me sick to my stomach. A very weird odor, to be sure.

I have nearly 60 hats in my collection and have never run into this before. A real head-scratcher, this one, and I am opting to return it also.

I think I am going to just wait for my next 2 customs to come in and take a break from ebay for awhile, and definitely no lottery tickets either!

I have a cure you can do it will work for any odor, but you have to be careful on doing this. Buy some Peppermint Oil. Put your hat in a large black lawn bag way in the bottom of this bag, lay on flat surface, near the opening of the bag place a folded up paper towel that you have folded over a few times making it small in size, put three or four drops of the Peppermint Oil on the paper towel and then close the bag shut, you can use a twist tie. Make sure the oil does not have any contact directly with the hat. Next day (24 hours in the bag) take out the paper towel....LEAVE the hat in the bag do not touch it yet...step two...put some coffee grounds (not used ones, fresh) in a small container, I use a small plastic one that you dip french fries in ketchup, put the coffee ground where the Peppermint oil on the paper towel was at, and leave it over night with the bag closed tied shut. If your hat still smells bad after this,...you may need to call a Priest. I have always had success in getting out any odor using this method it should work for you.

That's a new one on me. Thanks for sharing. I've tried newspapers and baking soda, but the best so far in my travels has been fresh air. But that was just for cigarette smoke.
Seal it up in a black plastic bag or box with one of those static cling dryer sheets & set it in the sun. Works very well & the perfume/soapy odor of the dryer sheet will dissipate quickly.

Nice looking derby, damn! Will it fit me? Looks like a 6 1/2 though...

Yep!... a very common eBay seller interpretation of hat size. If no label is shown, you have to ask for this measurement. Those dimensions show 6 3/4 - 6 7/8. Even too small for my wee cranium.
