Follow the link to the article with a few more paintings and some explanations. I'm sure there are a few of you who've seen all this, but I never have, and some of you must not have as well.

I've always loved that picture.

Actually, Tom Selleck was originally cast to play Indy but there was a conflict because he had just made a commitment to be the star of Magnum P.I. and so he had to back out. If you watch the "Making Of.." progrm with the Indiana Jones boxed set they even have the screen test of him and actress Sean Young who was an early contender for the role of Marion Ravenwood.

I do recall watching the Magnum P.I. episode "Raiders of the Lost Art".

Tom was in season 8 of the show by the time they scripted this parody and was hopefully content with the substantail pay cheque and praise he had received in the role of Magnum.

As quoted from another site.

Tom Selleck was Steven Spielberg's second choice for the role of Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford was his first, but George Lucas objected, since Ford had been in both American Graffiti and Star Wars. Selleck was not able to take the role because he was committed to Magnum, P.I.. However, that series did not go into production until Raiders' filming had already wrapped. Selleck was in fact in Hawaii waiting for the series to start as the final scenes to be filmed (the opening sequence) were being shot in Hawaii. "Magnum" did an episode called "Legend of the Lost Art" that parodied "Raiders", complete with hat, whip, booby traps, etc.

I always liked Steranko's concept paintingS of Indy. He is a big fan of the Golden Age adventure films like "China", et al.
I had always heard about the Magnum but I finally saw it I was really disappointed.

Sincerely,
The Wolf
