Does 4oz hide from Aero exist?

I have keeping my eye on the Aero jacket that made from 4oz hide for years but no luck, I noticed those heavyweight Aero jackets are barely pops out in here as well as in ebay.

I asked Dom from Aero about the weight of the jacket from their stock jacket page many times when I saw the jacket marked heavy, not one time the weight beyond 6 lbs, my latest purchase from Aero was Highwayman in heavy steerhide, weights 6 lbs.

My question is does Aero specifically ask Horween to made lighter hide (3-3.5oz), because first, it is much easier for machinist to make a jacket from a thinner leather. Second, Is it more difficult to produce thicker hide than lighter hide. (According to Stuart from Lost Worlds). At last, is it cheaper?

I personally wouldn't mind paying extra money to Aero for thickest hide they have to make my jacket.

I would guess more difficult to manufacture jackets of heavier weight and less demand for them. Probably higher cost to order smaller quantity of heavier leather. Surely horween makes it. JL has been using a batch of 3.75 oz horween cxl for a while. Maybe you could source it yourself from horween or a supplier and see if aero would do it for you

When I ordered my custom jacket from Johnson Leathers in black over die, I select a shaved hide, still plenty heavy and robust. I remember when Mike was the sales manager at Aero in the early 2000s he would high light partially heavy hides in Aeros' sales page.

I think it's luck of the draw...I recall the first batches of steer were all exceptionally heavy and as time wore on they became thinner and closer to FQHH. My old storse j106 dated 2012 was 4oz steer. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the 4oz plus steer for my 50's meets 30's HB but it was nothing more than dumb luck. I always request heaviest hide but that doesn't always translate to the 4oz plus steer.

That said I am sure it is consistently available from Horween.

There was a jacket made from exactly same hide from your HB from TB, but it weights only 7 lbs.
Well, at least I have the picture.....

You could always email Denny and reference my HB...he knows the hide and the jacket. Maybe ask them to alert you if it becomes available?

I don't think they treat me as a value customer as you, I placed my order last summer after saw your HB, but I canceled it because holly said they can't promise to give me the same thickness hide you had, I did mentioned your jacket, but they said they can't remember unless I provided order number, anyway they sounds very passive about this.

It's possible they can't be exactly sure what Horween will send although I can't help but think they do have some say in which hides they purchase...

It sounds to me more like they are trying to avoid working on a commission for a customer who seems likely to be "too picky" about every last detail. I'm sure they tolerate Ton ordering from them, because he doesn't return anything if he's not satisfied, he'll flip it, and at a substantial loss, no less. But when this attracts more who want EXACTLY what Ton got, and you can't guarantee EXACTLY, because no two leather jackets will ever be exactly the same, you tend to push off with a disclaimer, and if that dissuades a potential customer, it's probably for the best.

If you want 4oz leather, ask for it, and they can tell you yes or no. Ask for the same leather used for Ton's jacket, they can't do it. It's literally in use, *being* Ton's jacket. Another hide from the same batch might be close enough or not, but that's very subjective. How many oz thick it is, is not.

Maybe, although my feeling is that if I spec something and it meets the spec but I'm not satisfied...I forfeit my right to return. Totally different ballgame when it's an OTR item.

I completely agree with your approach in that regard. I'm saying someone who wants to order an exact copy of one of your orders, or wants to reference some aspects of it, is probably sending them a subtle red flag that they will be difficult to please.

Too picky? A man simply asking the thickest 4oz hide, that's it, and I never said I will return it if it doesn't comes out with the result I want, especially now I aware there is risk that you can be banned from returning jacket.
