It's just so subjective an area of discussion when comparisons are made between vintage manufacturers. Era being equal, let's say '30s to mid-'50s, I would give the advantage to Borsalino. I have several old Dobbs and like them very much. Sturdy, stylish hats. I also have several old Borso's and they are just magic. Light, yet dense felt, fine trimmings and subtle blocking choices which set them apart as among the very best of all vintage fedoras, in my opinion.
I don't think Dobbs was trying necessarily to compete with the European makes, but rather to try to get in on some of Stetson's market share. That's my take on it any way.
