Does anyone have any information on these hats? How do they compare in quality to the plain old Dobbs or the Dobbs Twenty? During what years were they made?
The ads I've seen run from about 1951 to 1960, obviously there were variations on the styling of the hat in that time, but it was a Stetson Whippet clone from the examples I've seen and had a $10 price point.
In terms of quality I think others are more able to advise you (HarpPlayerGene for example) .
Yes, I have four Hanovers and a couple Whippets. The Dobbs is a quality hat and a pretty good job of capturing the Whippet proportions.
They seem to pop up fairly frequently on Ebay and came in a variety of colors. They were just dressy enough to have been kept in nice condition in many cases, although they are true vintage hats.
I do notice that the felt is not quite as rich as true Whippets and the brim flange is a little more 'bowl-like' whereas the Whippets have more level brims. These are minor degrees of detail.
I enjoy my Hanover Squares a lot and wear them as part of my regular rotation. I think of mine as 'Fifties Fedoras.
