Dobbs Gotham?

A couple weeks ago my wife and I were in Charleston, SC. We stopped into a little shop in the market called "The Charleston Hat Man" (a very nice shop, by the way, with a friendly and helpful staff). Well, I was so fixated on buying myself a summer straw that I neglected to note my wife's interest in a sharp little green, fur-felt number. I just found out it was a "Dobbs Gotham." Anyone heard of these hats? I just spoke with the store again and they think they might have one more, but that they haven't been made in about 15 years.

I'd love to see some pictures or hear your experiences, I'm thinking about picking one up for her birthday.

Hey there David -

I know that shop! Our band played in Charleston about a year ago, and the dance caller we rode up with dragged us into that store and bought his first fedora there! I was gratified to see him do so. He's worn it regularly ever since.

Well, we've played there as recently as May 9th of this year, but due to a quirk of scheduling, we'll be back with the same, fedora-wearing dance caller on July 11th. I don't think it will be too hard to get him to re-visit the store the following day.

If you want me to look, just tell me your wife's hat size and I'll let you know if it's still there, give you an appraisal of the Gotham, and even get them to hold it for you. I'm picky and analytical so if you want details and they have that lid, I can tell you what I see and even take digital photos to send. If things work out like I think, it wouldn't be any trouble.

Bill,

Thank you so much for the offer, but it's probably not necessary. I did handle it enough to know that it was a pretty nice feeling hat (better than anything I've got, certainly). Really, the big thing to me is that I don't remember what it looks like well enough to find one on eBay or someplace if they're out of them.

It's looking like if they have one in her size, they're going to let me know today (they had to check the warehouse). I'll probably order it for her right then if they've got it and have it shipped here. She loved the hat.

I really ask about people's familiarity with it so that if they don't have it, I can perhaps find one elsewhere or something equivalent. She's done nothing but talk about that hat since we left Charleston.

At long last...

Here it is. It's Moss green and very nice feeling, the felt reminds me a lot of the Pilgrim I sold to Paddy shortly after I joined the board. It's certainly nicer than my two Dobbses (Dobbsi?). Interestingly, it has a dark brown sweatband instead of a black one like my hats. She loves it and has hardly taken it off since it arrived. I find it to be a very Alpine looking hat with the brim turned down - it's more "urban" with the brim snapped up.
