Do you consider Batman a "hat movie"

Not really... Herbert Johnson said they did the hats for the movie, though I don't really watch it for the hats. I used to watch Brazil for the hats, though if you consider Batman a hat movie I guess there are some there that grab your attention and that's what really matters.

Never liked the Batman movies much. The movie the Spirit looks promising, in the trailer it shows him wearing trench coat and fedora.
Originally "The Spirit" comic books were published as a Sunday newspaper supplement and ran fro 1939 to 1952. They are an absolutely amazing blend of noir detective, pulp hero, and goofy comic fun. Do yourself a favor and check out some of "The Spirit Archive" hardback collections from your local library. It is totally a "hat" comic book ;)
I think the movie is going to be all style and very little substance. It might be a fun popcorn movie, but it will not be able to match the original.

Batman (starring Michael Keaton) They are probably not much more than a costume hat, but there were some great looking lids.

I copied the bash of one of them a while back. The dirty detective's. I worked that into my Miller open crown Raider. Looked perfect, too. I think that was the only hat in Batman that cared for.

Joe vs the Volcano

Not sure I'd classify Joe v Volcano as a hat movie, but one of my favorites nonetheless. Tom Hanks does sport a few hats meant to fit his character early in the movie. Lloyd Bridges also makes a hat appearance.

I don't know if it should be subjectively considered a "hat movie", but I did enjoy looking at the hats in both Batman (1989) and Batman Returns.

As far as new "hat movies" go has anyone seen Lonely Hearts with Travolta and Hayek? If not, you may want to see it. As films go, the original black and white version is of course better.

But this remake does have some nuance in this area ... and is in color ... E

Not really.
Aside from a miscast as Nicholson (I've always said it should have been Steve Buscemi) as the joker, the 89 Batman was pretty good.

The basic plot of Batman Begins ( Mystical madman with cult following releasing gas over city) was swiped from the '33 Fritz Lang masterpiece The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. Everyone should see this a.s.a.p.!

Batman Begins was hardly original in production design or story. But I did like it.

I was referring to a quote by Chris Noland. I'm honestly not enough of a Batman fan to come to any sort of conclusion myself...

I thought that portion of the story came from a sub-plot in Batman: Dark Victory or Batman: The Long Halloween (can't remember which right now), the series by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale?

Of course, they could have swiped it as well.

That could be. I am not up to date on the comics.

To answer the op, if there are enough hats in a film to make you notice I would say Batman is a hat film.

On a similar note, Is L.A. Confidential a hat film? I cannot recally seeing the stars wear fedoras (in this period setting film no less) to make me think of this one as a hat flick.

I'm always a bit thrown when a picture is referred to here as a "hat movie," as if that's unusual. Heck, as an old movie buff, two out of every three movies I watch is a hat movie.

They might also simply have happened upon the same plot independently.

Very possible. It isn't a complex plot, and I can see how it would be easy to happen upon it more than once in anything dealing with "super" villians.
