DEFECT OPiNiONS: Would U return this jacket???

hi all...would appreciate some objective opinions on whether i'm on the right track with returning a jacket...

it was a special sizing so the company (who i don't wish to mention at this juncture) has told me i have to keep it.....i pointed out the defects that are in the photos with this posting...seams lining up differently on different sides of the jacket, and a pocket tilting a bit

they are not happy, but said they'd look it over and 'decide' whether they'll make a new one for me or not...i just wanted a reality check since i feel strongly that a jacket costing over $100 should not have misaligning seams (even if they are under the armpit), and the front pocket should be perfectly straight...the jacket cost $330 plus shipping

there was an issue also that i ordered their thin leather, and found out without being told that it was soft and drapey, which i didn't like, but would not have returned the jackt for that reason only...but the seams and the pocket seem (pun) like defects that should not be on the jacket, and they owe me a jacket that doesn't have them...

opinions not only welcome but appreciated...thanks

appreciated

thanks to both of you so far for the feedback...

i'm kind of obnoxious when i want to be, so i was definitely in 'give 'em heLL harry' mode...but i did wish a wall to bounce off...and this forum is the best place for that

thank you for being that wall...
...now, what do you think about the G-8 Conference?

Unless they were to give you a significant reduction in the cost, the pocket flaw alone would be enough to expect a replacement.

The seam issue is significant as well, but would probably not be noticed by a person other than yourself, so unless it affected your movement it probably can be tolerated.

I don't think you have a "leg to stand on" as far as the hide - as that should have been addressed prior to manufacture by requesting hide samples.

But the pocket slant is a fatal flaw; a reputable maker would accept the jacket back for repair/replacement IMO.

Yes you should return it. But being obnoxious isn't always the best approach. Even facing a resistant provider, you can often get better results the other way around. Either way, good luck -

Does the seam difference cause a problem with the jacket being worn and in moving your arms? An underarm seam is in such an unnoticable place I would not make a big issue over it. Especially if it does not affect the integrity of the garment. This is an aesthetic issue.
How badly is the pocket alignment due to this issue? Misaligned pockets are definitely a reason to return the jacket.

thanks for more response...

i'd say that my 'obnoxious' remark about myself was more of a joke...actually, i was quite nice, but determined that this was not right

thank you feraud for your input...as we all know, we can get these jackets for utilitarian purposes for $100 at the mall, when we purchase a hand made jacket by a specialty leather manufacturer of motorcycle jackets, it iS an aesthetic issue...we are paying over $300 for something nicely made and beautiful...so for me, seeing this had the underarm seam flaws, is DeFinitely NOT what i was purchasing...my unhappiness with the way the chest area draped with excessive ripples had me look the entire jacket over before deciding to return it...as far as i know, the poor draping was the result of just bad construction...i think i was right

i definitely appreciate the feedback...thanks

Aesthetic issue...

I think I see what Feraud means, maybe that "function" or integrity of the jacket is not affected but I believe this is more than JUST (if it doesn't affect the jacket)an aesthetic issue.
It is BAD construction, or maybe the result of bad pattern cutting, or a combination of both, perhaps due to alterations to patterns, since this was a "special order jacket".

And if it's a "special" jacket, then it had better be not just above, or below average.

I've noticed your posts like that, and I thought it was due to just typing errors...most forums have strict rules against doing that, or using teen script like:

I see where you are coming from and I dont think its that bad. Have you any idea whats involved with sewing anything let alone making a jacket and to fit?

Last summer The Leather Ranch went out of business, Fortunately I was in Winnipeg with my family and caught the sale. The deal was buy one and get the second for half of the price be it already on sale or not. I ended up buying a would be $1,100+ full length leather trench coat for around 700 IIRC, because of so my girl friend bought a very nice higher cut sheep skin mid weight coat for what was originally 500, at half price for 250 and because I bought mine another half price for 125.

Two of the buttons fell off of hers the first time she wore it and others are hanging by a thread. My trench coat had one fall off completley and another barely hanging on.

Wonder why they went out of business?

My point is its only $300, look at what real high end stuff costs. I buy a $90 pare of jeans, they fall apart in a year. I buy $25 from Wall Mart or Zellars and they last four plus years. Look at Nike Shoes...

Return... Only if you feel you couldn't wear it in public.

Partial refund if you think you payed too much (my vote)

Forget about it if you think its worth $300. At the standard shop rate of from $50 to $100 per hour for ANYTHING) that's not expensive at all, look at what you could buy at a local store for $350, Running shoes, Ive seen jeans go for $500 with a tag on the side that said color will rub off on other surfaces... You ever stop in to a Louis Vuitton, guess what a waist belt runs there...

Live with it or partial refund, that's my .02c

I'm sure that the company who sold this jacket to mR. jOhnny have a certain reputation for quality made goods. This jacket, by bad luck, or bad management
has been assembled and sewn together in a very amateurish "fashion"(sorry).
The product delivered is sub-par, for a company who is in business making leather garments.
Quality control?????

When I posted initially, I had only seen the first two photos, of the skewed armpit, chest seams- after seeing the third photo, I am absolutely shocked that THEY actually delivered this jacket- it is terrible.

Anyone who is sayong keep the jacket, it's not SO bad- please have a look here:

thanks either way

i did not post to get agreement (tho i like it), but i do appreciate every point of view either way...

being a rather opinionated chap i had my own point of view (guess what it is) but wanted a reality check, and was corroborated by it

i did wish to mention to 'opas coat', i did see your edit and switch of opinion to return the jacket, but i did wish to respond respectfully to the view that this was an inexpensive jacket...for me it wasn't

tho i post on a forum where most people spend $400 to $800+ for jackets, and i've done that, i earn usually $25,000-$30,000 a year...just because i like nice things doesn't mean they are inexpensive for me...just the opposite, i pay a lot to get something nice in a product i enjoy (or am infatuated with, such as leather jackets), and am pretty upset when money that means something to me is blown...i don't buy louis vuitton...i buy levis jeans and denim shirts from blairs (very nice actually)...and nice leather jackets

i've pursued the arts as a lifestyle, and always earned less to pursue what i love...so blowing $340 on an item is not an option...i'll pay it if it's worth the price and i decide to make the sacrifice...that's perhaps why getting something like this was such an affront...the company owner's wife, who admitted on the phone she didn't know anything about jacket construction, told me i special ordered it and it was mine, period...i told her about the flaws, and she said they'd decide once they see it back...i sent the email/pix and haven't heard back yet

i purposefully have not mentioned the company's name as i hope they will prove to be worthy...they do indeed have a reputation for being a manufacturer of 'real deal' premium motorcycle jackets in the u.s. and in business for at least 50 years, if not more (all i'll say)

thanks again all, and my point being that just because one buys nice things, doesn't mean the price paid is disposable dollars if the thing isn't up to standards...just the opposite, when money means a lot to you, the funds you put aside for things you enjoy mean very much...and even if it costs more, i'll only patronize manufacturers who understand this and vie to the correct standards...aero, lewis and others who we all know

I completely understand where you are coming from here. I by no means have allot of money or much of high end anything, I do however know when there is a deal to be had and when I have found what I want. I had been looking for near three years for a leather trench coat and finally found it (one that fit! I'm 6'4") at what was a steal of a deal with the pros of my girl friend getting a very nice coat at the same time too.

$300 is and is not allot of money. I'm looking right now at the top of the FL page where the is an add for Magnoli Clothiers, 350 for leather coats, suits and 220 for shoes respectably. IMHO, that is not worth $350, more like, well... $175 to me. It would have to be around there for me to purchase a coat like that off a store rack to ware. And only then would it be worn for general every day adventures. I doubt that there would be any off shore company that would sell that under mass production, as with the pockets, the stitch tension is all messed up, seams abd zippers could have been done better...

Is this a repro LW style jacket?

Johnny,
I'm with ya 100% on all your points.
After seeing the last pic of the misaligned pockets, I was appalled that the company is giving you such a hard time.
If it were me, I would "out" them just for giving you grief given the severity of the flaws.
As for paying good $ for luxury items, even though one's income doesn't justify it, (like my income) again I agree. I have no problem paying top dollar for an item, AS LONG AS IT'S TOP QUALITY. In a post elsewhere, I talked about some minor flaws in my new Aero Highwayman. Now, none of them are as serious as your pockets, or armpit misalignments, but I paid probably twice what you paid for your jacket. I know nothing is perfect, but I also know that a company that stakes its reputation on "quality" shouldn't let stuff like this happen.
I can live with the flaws in my jacket.
I definitely wouldn't be able to live with the ones in your jacket.
BTW, any chance you would PM me the name of the company, with the promise that I won't post it anywhere else?
Good luck Johnny and please let us know what happens.
Lenny

send it back for refund, not exchange!

Knowing what quality Johnny looks for in Jackets (owning 2 of your previous jackets....the Schott Highwayman and the Vanson Mercury), I wouldn't hesitate to send it back. I personally don't think that ANY reputable business would be offended by a customer pointing out obvious flaws, and requesting what they paid for. If they were mad, irratated or even overtly miffed because you pointed this out then they don't deserve your business. Period.
