Gone are the days.... Bruno Samartino, Ivan Putsky "Da Polish Hammer", Chief Jay Strongbow, Bo Bo Brazil, Baron Ratschke, Argentina Appolo.... Sigh. At 79 George had a good run, between the physical abuse and ravages of being on the road so long.

Yup. Back when wrasslin' was real, not this fake stuff.

Seriously, at 79, that's a good run. Sammartino is 81, I believe. The younger crew keep exiting the stage too young, due to steroid abuse.

Rest in Peace, Bill Paxton. :(

I'm very sad to see him gone. I know I hadn't seen him in a lot lately, but he was always one of my favorite childhood actors. Loved him in movies like Twister. Plus, Hudson was always my favorite Colonial Marine from Aliens.

Two things I learned today about the novelty song and video "Fish Heads" by Barnes and Barnes, which I saw a zillion times on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV).

One: one half of Barnes and Barnes is Billy "Danger! Will Robinson!" Mumy.

Two: the video was directed by Bill Paxton!

Former major league baseball pitcher Ned Garver has died at the age of 91. A very good pitcher for several very bad teams in a career that spanned 1948 to 1961, Garver accomplished one of the most astounding single-season achievements in the history of the game, when, in 1951 he won 20 games for the St. Louis Browns, a club which went 52-102 on the season. Garver's victories amounted to almost 40 percent of his club's total wins that season, and he put frosting on the cake by batting .305 for the year. To this day he remains the only pitcher in modern Major League history to win 20 games for a club that lost more than 100 games on the season.

In recognition of his accomplishment, Browns owner Bill Veeck raised Garver's salary for 1952 to $25,000, making him the highest paid player on the club. One writer memorably described Garver's 1951 record as ranking on the scale of miraculousness "somewhere between Johnny Vander Meer's consecutive no-hitters and the raising of Lazarus."
