Daughter of "Migrant Mother" photo comments on its iconic status

"I wanted to make sure I never lived like that again," says McIntosh, who turns 77 on Saturday. "We all worked hard and we all had good jobs and we all stayed with it. When we got a home, we stayed with it."

That is nice! Though my understanding is that that photographer very much posed the shots.

That's a powerful picture and a moving story. The quote below summed it all up for me:

"We never had a lot, but she always made sure we had something. She didn't eat sometimes, but she made sure us children ate. That's one thing she did do."

True adversity will either bring out the best or the worst in people. In the case of the "migrant mother", it appears that it was the best that came through.

A friend of mine wrote a song inspired by that photo. The song, YOUNG MOTHER by Monica Taylor won 2nd place in the 2000 Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest. She and Patrick Williams preformed as THE FARM COUPLE and released it on their FERTILE GROUND cd.
