whew! - I mean DOH!

actually I am still confounded by all the variations and conflagrations of Open Roadism on here and elsewhere. That one was my size and looked to be in excellent condiotion and was only $20 or so when I threw my bid up.

I was happy about winning but then I got cold feet - I tried to email the seller but my hotmail is being bizarre lately. I was mostly worried about whether it was beaver and that sweatband looked a little too marblelized for my liking....the wife agreed it said 'pleather'.

Feel free to assuage my fears and tell me I am okay without it (at least until I learn more / or find a Stratoliner in silver belly, since that is what I really like better anyway!)......if I goofed and let a beaut of a 7x beaver in uncommonly good condition for under three figures out of the bag, feel free to beat me mercilessly with pleather sweatbands.

Just and fyi, live auction links are not permitted unless you are the seller.
You should not draw unwanted bidders to an auction you are interested in. ;)

Okay, THAT i did NOT know - Will keep in mind for future......but it is okay to post after its over, yes?

pgoat,

As I understand it the Xes do mean that there is a beaver mix in the felt, but as has been discussed in other threads just what the number of Xes mean regarding the percentage of the mix is pretty much anyone's guess these days.

I'm not an expert on dating hats; all I can say is that yours is a more recent one based on the size tag and such, but not all that recent as it doesn't have the European size on it. (Anyone who knows better than I feel free to jump in here.)

It does look to be in like-new condition, though, and will doubtless be a nice hat. It may be a bit stiffer than older ORs though, so changing the crease if that is your desire may be a bit difficult.

I was quite surprised a few minutes ago by also winning a 7 1/2 LO Open Road (a 3X) with no competition. This one needs a bit of cleaning, but even so I'm surprised no one else bid on it. [huh]

Regards,
Tom

Tom, That was a good buy on the OR as far as I can tell from the pictures. Cleaned-up it will at least make a good beater if not something nicer. If you decide not to keep it, let me know. I love reblocking old OR's.

You also got a fair shipping charge.

The shipping charge for the OR originally posted was $16.00. That's a tad high and usually indicates a seller who also uses shipping and handling as a profit center. It happens a lot. We all need to beware of ridiculous shipping charges. Sometimes a good deal isn't so good after all.

Carter is right - I saw another old hat with a low bid (NR) and the sh was $32! That's fine for priority insured, etc. on a new hat (I paid around that for my new VS) but when you're trying to stay under a c-note for a new hat you don't want to pay $20+ for shipping.

having said that I just sold an ebay lot of two fairly thick felt, wide brim fedoras and the weight of both hats and an outer shipping carton brought the SH total over $20! That's for Priority.

Just for the record, I was outbid on that Stetson OR - which is ok; I do want one but I'd rather wait for a Silver colored one, or a Stratoliner so I don't need to re-shape the crown.

There is something to owning a vintage Stratoliner [I have one] but just a word up on the Akubra Campdraft... its a great Stratoliner/Open Road style fedora that comes open crowned and is so easy to shape. For the price most Stratoliners will bring you can save by getting a Campdraft. [of course the Stratoliner would be vintage and the Campdraft would not]
I believe AtomicGlee has a silverbelly Campdraft that looks fantastic. The Campdraft in my avatar is Taupe Fawn.

Thanks - I'll have to try one (Campdraft) - I don't care about vintage or brand name so much. I rate build quality, finish and fit as higher priorities.

Can you recommend a good reliable vendor? There seem to be lots of Akubra dealers about.

Choosing a color will be tough; I know I prefer the silver to the off-white of most ORs, but that taupe fawn brown is pretty sweet! (RBH! You've already got me considering thin ribbons - NOW look what you've gone and done!!lol )

Fantastic! I have several thin and several wide, both are good to have as to the mood I am in.

Here is the place I ordered my Campdraft,
http://shop.valleycountry.com.au/catalogue/category1/category13/category54/product334
do a search here on campdraft and you will find good info. I believe The Dutchman ordered his and recieved it in record time [for a Campdraft]
good Luck!

I wonder how the felt is on the 7x. I have two vintage 7x stetsons, both of which are clear beaver. They have beautiful felt.

I also have a '80s or '90s vintage 10x open road, which is far worse than my vintage 3xs. stiff and coarse.
