Custom Crushable Fedoras

Do any of the custom hat shops make crushable fedoras?

I've looked in a couple of old threads, and no-one's mentioned them. So I'm guessing that the answer's no.

No idea, but in the case of there not being any, I'd recommend an Akubra made of pliofelt. It's true fur felt treated to withstand crushing from the top of the crown. Not rolling, just crushing. There's the Akubra Casual, Traveler, and International. There was a recent thread posted with photographs of all three. There's also the Christy's Of London Foldaway fedora, which has some high ratings from contributors here. Borsalino makes a traveler model, but it's fairly shapeless. I sold mine a month after buying it.

I'm guessing that your guess is right. But, you know, I doubt it would hurt to ask.

A "rollable" lid would be harder to make than a "crushable," I'd imagine, because a rollable would (I think) require an unreeded sweatband, and few (if any) small, custom hatters are equipped and willing to install them. I came upon a website for a specialty sewing machine business that featured some illustrations for a vintage Singer model designed to sew unreeded sweatbands into "soft" hats. That reason for the mention of "soft" was evident in the illustrations. Man, the way the hat body had to be manipulated, and the way the machine did what it did, were the oddest things I'd seen since my last family get-together.

I have three Borsalino "rollable" and "water resistant" lids. Two were gotten at http://www.firststreetleather.com/store/hats-ss2.html and one on Ebay. I love 'em! I can center dent them, pork pie them, c-crown, etc. Then I can just punch it out, roll it up, pack it away! And it is nice felt! The sweatband is fabric, but that's the only drawback I've found. I've even rebanded two of them. They are my favorites. Yes, they are expensive. But, for me, they work perfectly.

Hope that might help.

rollable

Actually, Optimo makes a rollable hat. It has a Monticristi optimo shape (ridged crown) but made of the wonderful Optimo felt. And, of course, you get to pick your color.

Call them at (773)238-2999.

Two of my friends have seen Graham's personal hat and now want one for themselves!
