Hello all, im new here and this is my first post. I just wanted to share with you some websites that I found that are great for making custom clothing...meaning you design it and you give them your measurements for them to make a custom piece.

For great shirts--www.andersontailors.com
For reporduction clothing--http://www.magnoliclothiers.com/
For other suits and shoes--http://www.philippegalliano.com/WELCOME.htm

Hope you can get some great deals....they look like pretty good prices! I have only purchased a shirt from anderson but i may try the others later on.

Will check out the websites...I wish I could find someone that can make clothes out of my vintage patterns. Some of the tailors are a bit too expensive for me. I was thinking of doing a sewing course..do it one day..when I get time and money. oh and a sewing machine.:eusa_doh:

I think that phillippe gallianno would work from patterns I know they can work from photographs. You could email them and see.

I HIGHLY recommend talking to a dressmaker in your area. (Nothing against the websites mentioned) A dressmaker not only has the same qualifications as tailors, but consider having someone custom make your garment to actually fit you, verses your measurements sent through email. While you can give the measurements of your bust, waist and hip, consider that all shapes are not created equally. And while one of these garments may come back with your correct sizing, it still isn't made for your exact shape. Plus, if that garment comes back incorrectly sized, you do end up paying extra to have it tailored regardless.

She speak-um truth.

Sage advice. A little extra money spent locally means a lot more service over the life of the garment.

Ditto. A tape measure is a powerful tool in a learned hand.

For menswear or women's wear?

Both. I have worked with a dressmaker in the past and we did everything from custom bridal and prom to vintage and menswear. We also did tailoring of pre-bought clothing.

Tailors used to be known for their construction of mens and womens suits. Nowadays people think of tailors as the folks who work out of dry cleaner shops. Traditional tailors still do exist, but they tend to be harder to find, and at much steeper rates. I don't disagree with the rates though. You do get what you pay for.

Dressmakers are multifaceted people who can not only tailor clothing (in the traditional way) but can also custom make clothing (mens/ womens/ childrens) which is something that many tailors won't touch. Prices again may be higher than made to measure (which is made from an already existing pattern) and also ready to wear (which is bought off the rack). This is because the garment is not being made from a pattern that is considered the average size of the customer. Rather it is a custom one of a kind piece.

The principles are generally the same. The trick to this is the drafting of the pattern. If the dressmaker is pretty good at it, then you can get decent paper drawn up, and that's great. Just make sure the dressmaker comes with credentials. It's not going to be Henry Poole on the Row, or Mr. Fioravanti in NYC, or even Mr. Mathis in Minneapolis ;) , but it'll get you started for sure. That said, there is something to be said for a tailor who's got experience in menswear.

In fact, I've made clothing for many client's wives, so it can go both ways.

I'm interested in the Anderson Tailors shirts... what experience have you had with them - how do they compare to a regular shirt at the mid priced end of the market? Does anyone know which collar style comes closest to the 30s / 40s spear point collar?

I have some money sitting from Christmas that would buy the offer set of five - they just almost seem too cheap to be any good, if you see what I mean?

The Anderson shirts are pretty good quality for the price. They have the single stiched side instead of double and according to GQ thats a sign of quality.

I got the stiff collar and they seem to be a little too stiff (its hard to flip up the collar the first couple times). But once you flip it up a couple times it seems to go better. The rest of the shirt is great...it feels nice and fits great.

If your going to get the five shirt deal there is a thing where they will make one shirt for you and send it out for you to try before they make the rest so that if there are any changes to be made you can make it on the rest of the shirts...I would recommend doing that.

Cool, I must have missed that. Definitely a good idea. I'd probably go for a couple of minor variations, but mostly keeping it the same in general - at least close enough that getting one should be an ideal test (most importantly of measurements - I'm liking the option to measure a well-fitting shirt as a way of doing that, as I've got a couple that are excellent fits, just not the details I prefer).

Yes please, I'd like to see photos! :) Which collar shape did you go for? There's one of the specials, the "long" that I think looks good, not sure if it's too exaggerated for a 40s spear point though?

Sounds like I'd be better off with the soft collar, as it would be my intention to wear a collar bar....?
