I'm looking for a custom shoe/bootmaker who can deal with heel and sole lifts and special insole issues.
the problem: My right leg is almost an inch and a half shorter than the left and I wear a half inch lift on the outside and a quarter inch inside my shoes/boots. Also, the feet are slightly different sizes/widths, same injury.
For years I wore boots w/heels 'cause they could accommodate the outside lift the best, but then other problems developed and I now wear orthotic inserts, different for each foot (the right has the lift built-in)--and they make the inside room disappear in a lot of boots. I've accumulated various dress shoes that can work (for short times) and Chukkas as well. I have a supply of sneakers (no molded soles) for which I can peel the sole off, put the lifts on, and replace the soles, etc. and keep'em going. Same with work boots.
So far: I look for hiking/walking shoes/boots and casual foot wear that have flat soles that can be peeled off and the lift run underneath, and the soles are replaceable, and can also accommodate the orthotics and lifts inside. Heeled shoes, boots can also work.
What I'm looking for: I am 56 now,and for the last 40 years have been jerry-rigging all this to take care of an old injury. I think it's time I spend the money and get shoes/boots custom made to take care of all this--'cuase I'm beginning to feel the effects. I wonder if anyone else has faced this adventure and would like to steer me to a custom shoe/bootmaker who could take care of me. The Russell site looks good and I like their stuff, but thought there might be other good places too, and closer to home. I live in the Philadelphia area, so anyplace on the NE corridor, NYC, etc. would be easy for me.
Thanks,
Mark
