Cruising to Alaska! Anyone got any suggestings?

Hey everybody, i'm comig to Alaska next summer and i was wondering if anyone here knows any good places to go? Maybe somewhere that has a 20's theme...

We will be stopping in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Haines.

maybe i can meet some people and catch a drink!

I'm sure Mr. Vim can help you out with Juneau, I've not lived there since I was a kid.

I used to fly into Ketchikan pretty regularly, and it has some early 20th Century sites.

My favorite that I'd recommend is the Gilmore Hotel, built in 1927. http://www.gilmorehotel.com/ I had a good meal in their restaurant several years ago but things could have changed since then. Its got a great 1920s feel to it.

Less impressive, but quaint is the New York Hotel and Cafe by Creek Streek. http://www.thenewyorkhotel.com/

Through its REALY touristy its worth walking Creek Street and seeing the old houses and things. But like most of the shops on the cruise route is mostly the standard stuff sold by the tour companies that you'll see in all the towns. http://creekstreetketchikan.com/

A bit out of town is Potlach Totem Park if you want to see some Totem poles and there is a small antique car museum if you like vintage cars. http://www.potlatchpark.com/

I defer to Chasseur in all matters of Ketchikan, I've never been there but have been meaning to go.

I'm in Juneau, and there are a lot of places that were built in the 1920's or before, but not many of those places still have that vibe... here are the few I've found.

The Alaskan Bar still looks as it did since opening in the early 1900s.

The Hangar is one of my favorite places to sit a spell. It was built in the 40's as the hangar for the Alaskan Bush pilots, now it serves great seafood and beer. You can still take seaplane tours from the pier there, and the view is grand.

If staying for more than a day, I would recommend a hike around the Medenhall Glacier area, especially the ice caves.

The Alaskan Brewery is a great stop for some very unique, limited test beer they produce.

Another great thing to see is the cable car that goes to the top of Mt. Roberts where at the top there is a great restaurant and amazing views of the surrounding area.

Take me. I went to Canmore Canada. It was heaven on earth but close to Alaska.
