Has anyone had any luck with fining reasonably priced vintage items from craigslist? I haven't had any luck at all locally- anything vintage is priced at retail. It's as if they looked on ebay and then doubled that price.

Most of the prices are pretty steep but sometimes you can get a good one if you look in the free section. Some people just put boxes of stuff on there and sometimes there are some real winners in them. I personally have tried it but have always been a little late on the draw and never seem to get anything.

No luck finding vintage clothes, I even tried placing an ad awhile back & the only reply I got was someone telling me to go to such & such a flea market, which I couldn't go to because it was so far away & one weekend only.

I just saw a very nice vintage sofa in the Village on Craigslist. The owner said the upholstery needed re-doing, but that just makes it more authentic. Big fat wooden feet. He'd had a couple people call, but never show up to look at it. It amazes me how great old stuff has nobody interested, and modern junk is grabbed up right away. You'll see this at Salvation Army type places, too.
But I looked at something like 500 listings (out of 900) before I saw it.

I once inquired about an old mahogany scull out of Sacramento, but something seemed kinda fishy about the deal. I'd feel more secure about the place, if there was heavier moderation or assurance that these people are really on the up and up.

in the past..folks put a classified in the -paper- newspaper...how did anyone know -they- were on the up and up either?

Yeah, I know. Maybe its the technology thing ... or maybe its the abundance of media reports on creeps lurking in places like that. Or a combo? I don't buy much on Ebay either, for the same reasons. Paranoid, I guess.

Coo, and I thought we had it hard on Freecycle!

We don't have Craigslist down here in Cornwall, but I imagine it as being kind of like an on-line flea market. Like Miss Neecerie says, caveat emptor - not sure I'd be happy to buy an expensive piece of furniture on the strength of a photo.

The great pity is that our local charity shops are practically hurling vintage furniture at us, but we just haven't got the room for any more :rage: If anyone can think of a sensible way of shipping good stout polished wood furniture across the pond, I'll gladly look out for you!

At least with ebay they have the feedback system and paypal to back you.

I have tried twice within the last week to get two separate things on Craigslist and both of them fizzled. One for sewing patterns. She was out of state and I asked her to get back with me with a postage total. Never heard back. (I emailed her again yesterday)
The other was a china cabinet. We emailed back and forth several times, I asked her for deminsions, (that was like pulling teeth), and finally I told her I would definitely take it. I took her number and told her my husband would call her and they could set up a time to pick it up. When he called, she said that someone else was coming to look at it! That ticked me off so I told her to just forget it!

Do these people want to sell their stuff or not? Very frustrating.
The only vintage clothing I have seen was advertising for stores I already know about.

I just got a vintage 50's dresser set for a steal. However it was my 3rd try. People are not at all willing to hold anything and it definitely seemed like first come first served. The quality was a bit less that I would have preferred but I can fix most things.
Bring someone along though - the fellow I bought it from was very creepy with an eye patch and no teeth. I would have felt uncomfortable without a friend there.
Clothing-wise I have had better luck looking up estate sales on there and then treking around to the sales.

I LOVE craigslist!

I got this awesome stove... for $100! With the jadeite shakers which were going for $125 each at the antique stores in this area (admittedly, crazy overpricing there). But hey! What a Wedgewood!

I haven't tried to buy any clothes (I just have to try things on, having a large and oddly proportioned body), but have gotten lots of nice things for the house, including a huge clawfoot tub for when we un-remuddle the bathroom, someday. Also a 30s dining room set, for about $200. A lot of what you see on there is mislabeled too - why does everyone put "Eames Era" on art deco? Why does everyone try to label mid-century as Art Deco? Unclear on the definitions, I guess.
