hey, the NYT did a business article on consignmnt shops

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/24/business/24consignment.html

"Stores selling consignment, resale and otherwise "gently used" shoes and clothing have gone mainstream. The National Association of Resale and Thrift Stores said it had 25,000 stores — up from about 20,000 five years ago."

"When people say, 'I don't think I could wear something that someone else has had on,' I say, 'When you try it on down at Neiman's, you don't know who's tried it on before you.' It could've been tried on by 15 people."

I try not to think about that sort of thing when I'm trying on something. Especially in S.F. stores...

I was at a vintage shop today, selling some of my items, and the woman asked me "Is consignment ok with you?" Of course it was!

I think consignment is ideal. You get half (or so), and if it doesn't sell, you get to take it back! It works for me because, as a buyer/wearer and not a vendor, the things I sell tend to fit me, so I don't HAVE to get rid of them. I guess I see the "somebody else's problem" benefit of selling outright tho.

Thoughts?

I love consignment shopping, thats how I found my carved flower bakelite bracelet, for $20

It is hit ant miss, because some of the stuff is so overpriced, and then there are some real treasures. Much more so than a vintage store. Ive never sold at one, because sometimes the return can take forever, but then again Im not a big seller.

In NYC, at least on the Upper East Side where a lot of the little ma-n-pa stores are located, consignment shopping is handicapped by the fact that most of those stores refuse to deal in men's clothes, and those that did used to be pretty snotty about it. One told me designer labels only, and that Ralph Lauren did not qualify.

Thrift stores rule. They RULE!

I wouldn't go for any underwear but hats, shirts, pants, even shoes... you bet.

Clothes at the thrift stores I frequent are professional cleaned and pressed prior to display. I get Italian poplin shirts for $1.00 and Johnston & Murphy shoes for $2.00. I like fine quality and this approach places it within my reach.
