Confused

Alright. Now I am confused. I have a Knox just like the one in the ad except mine is royal blue and not brown. It is too small for me but my wife wore it to a concert a few weeks ago.
I did not realize that it was a 1954 vintage. What an odd looking stingy brim. It looks better on my wife than on the guy in the ad anyway. ;)

Regards to all,

It's the curves of the gal pal

Nice hat. Why the confusion? A wide brim 40's on my wife would look like a 10 gallon western hat on me!

Women have generally smaller features, and quite frankly, can "pull off" the narrow brim look.

It all comes down to "balance" of the hat. James, you are wide shouldered and tall, so you can wear a wide brim and taller crown. Me..well you saw that although short, I am "stocky" so I can also pull off somewhat of the same look.

Put a "stingy brim" on me and it looks stupid. On a woman, with narrow features and slender voluptuousness, it looks great.

Well I was confused over two things actually. One that the hat was actually at least ten years older than I thought and two that men in those days would wear such a hat. The bow at the back just does not do much for me. It looks like a woman's hat!
I suppose I was also surprised that the brims were that small in the 1950s. Not very much snap in that brim. ;)

Regards to all,

J

P.S. You are right it doesn't do that much for me either. You should see me in a bowler---now that is funny. :D

James, I have purchased a couple dozen original hat ads off ebay that date back to the 30s. In looking through them I also was surprised to see that stingy brims were apparently always offered. So you cannot always date a hat just by the brim width alone I guess.

I suppose I am not that experienced with stingy brims. The ads actually surprised me. I knew they had stingy brims in the thirties but those have really wide ribbons and a strangely large crown. I guess the fashion cycle returned in the fifties. LOL
