So, I went to an exhibition at the art gallery today - Taisho Chic (Japan in the 20s and 30s). It was a gorgeous autumn day, so I wore a silk peach full skirt, black long sleeved sweetheart top, black peep toes and an edwardian inspired fitted light denim jacket over the top. My normal curls and red lippie.

I was standing out the front of the gallery, admiring the day an the Botanical Gardens when a group of Japanese tourists make their way to me. "Japanese exhibition?" they ask me. Yes, I say, thinking they're asking me if they came to the right place.

Next thing I know, they're all crowded around me, posing and snapping pictures. Huh. I just smiled and went with the flow. Gave me my day's giggle.

Had my first negative comment yesterday from my best friend. Only she didn't see me in person but she saw my avatar and said something rather rude and followed it up with "i hope you didn't let anyone see you like that'. I am taking it a bit rough. I don't understand.

PS, your avatar pic is my favorite pic of you! Especially when it's in color due to those pretty blues eyes... How sad that she is jealous of her own friend.

Sari, rmr and Cherry Lips,
Thank You! I appreciate it! I haven't told her it upset me. Not worth trying to hear her backtrack, ya know? Lol, I love her to bits but this is one of those time s I appreciate her living out of state!

Cherry, I was thinking about you when I was skincare shopping the other day. You and your pallor obsession. I used to use Neutrogena Sheer Touch Sunblock in 55 and because of ratio of UVA and UVB fighting ingredients when you use the recommended amount it gives your face a whiter cast but it isn't at all a dry looking face but more of a super moisturized pallor. I saw that they now offer an 85 spf. I know it won't actually give you more pale skin but will give that appearance while it protects you.

PS, thanks for thinking of me!
My pallor project is working out pretty well so far. Since sunscreen makes me break out, I never leave the house in the middle of the day without my loyal parasol or sun hat. That and I linger in the shade like a vampire lol

She had to have meant 'I hope you didn't let any men see you like that because then you'd have to fight them off with a stick'.

I used to get that a lot when I lived at Haight and Ashbury in SF - during the 80s, busloads of Japanese tourists would disgorge and search for the hippies (dudes, you're 20 years too late) and when they couldn't find any, wanted pictures of the crazy American vintage girl - I used to charge them $5 each picture! And they happily paid!

Some people have very bad associations with having one's hair up in a bandana - let's hope it was something like that! Besides, that is an adorable look on you. And you're very, very pretty, so yes, it could be an attack of the green-eyed monster...

I was thinking the same thing. It could very well have been that she (and many other people) wouldn't wear their hair that way and thus assumed you wouldn't either and thought that joking about not going out that way wasn't inappropriate.

A lot of people just don't seem to get it. It's not them and it's not now so it must be stupid. They just don't get it.

Last year, on November 1st, I was on the way to visit some friends, wasn't in particular dressed up in any way, just my handlebar (it was longer then) and my eye-patch. On my way to the checkout line a young lady and her son, who appeared to be 4ish, crossed in front of me.....not really that close, probably 2 aisles away. The young lady had her mind elsewhere, but the kid was looking around and seeing everything. He caught sight of me, and I could hear him yelling "Mom! LOOK! A PIRATE!!! A PIRATE!!!!!! MOM! MOM! LOOK! had to laugh, outta the mouths of babes.

Yes, it was a beautiful exhibition, wasn't it? I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I like the way you think! Wish that I'd thought to charge them for the pic!

Repost Just to make a point of it being cross-generations:

(Ever see the movie, Suzie Q? Well I think that might be why. It might';ve been what got me into retro. Cuz I remember as a little girl, watching that movie and thinking:

"Gee, girls in the 50's were so glamorous! Even in the 40's, 30's, 20's....! Girls back then wore pink/red lipstick and blue eyeshadow! I wanna do that! But I can't. Supposedly only whores do that now (heard that somewhere... don't know where.) "Aww! Who cares! I can't wait till I'm older! I'm'a bring the 50's back!"

Years later at a so-called "beatnik/ 50's dress up poetry jam" I was the only one out of booty jeans, without a muffin top, in a poodle skirt.

I walked around in it the whole day, amid stares, head held high among the "Wannabe-thug/Gotti boy" boys, VPL Jeans wearing girls and "Pregnant-Teen-Statistic in waitings".

I even remember getting a "Is she crazy?" stare from my Algebra teacher. (WHO I HATED!!!) I gave him a blank stare back and he looked away. But repeated the look several times.

I even get it from my mother!

"Why do you always dress this way? Why are you so weird?" (Said even though I am no where near 100% retro or 100% anything. Never have been for that matter Last part I believe, said in jest.)

I tell her, "It's either this or VPL (visible-panty-line) Jeans, with everything hanging out!" (Even though I am in no way going that way whether she likes my style or not!)

She gets my point.

***rant over***

And that's how a teenager handles it! lol :D

We were leaving a casino last night and the valet who brought around our car took one look at us and said "I'm surprised you don't have white walls" on our car of course, a PT Cruiser. But hey at least he knew about white walls :)

Wish I'd seen it, MissS - it sounds like an absolutely gorgeous ensemble!

:eek:fftopic: So glad to see the recommendations from you and Miss1929 for the Taisho Chic exhibition - I'm so looking to seeing it and some of the associated programs. I was going to start a thread about it in Events - I am dying to get ahold of the poster for the exhibition! The other great one is the V&A Deco exhibition coming to Melbourne - we're planning a weekend down there to catch it.
