Collar stays

This might be a stupid question, but why is it in movies, old or new, that take place in the 30's and 40's, the men look liket they dont' have collar stays, their collar seems to go every which way except stay down. Is it b/c they didn't have collar stays or what?

Never really thought about it; I imagine that back then, even on attached collars, collar stays didn't exist, and instead they were meant to be starched to stay down (like with a detachable collar). However, starch collars can be rather uncomfortable, so they wore them without starch, thus making them appear floppy.

In those days, attached collars weren't fused/interlined like today's are- and also no collar stays, if you mean the stiffening, permanent or removeable, in the collar points.

I enjoy collars which flap!
