thin jacket, socks & loafers

looked good while I froze my dumb azz off
We lived in South Chicago during those years too - Dad was in grad school. One winter, his car was buried for weeks and he took me and my brother everywhere on a sled. I remember it as fun, but I was a kid :)

For me: Cold Weather training Fort Drum i believe, Watertown New York, winter @1974. Temp.... minus who knows...so cold you couldn’t drink enough beer or anything else to get a buzz. Be well. Bowen

-23°C in the middle of Germany in early 1997, as far as I remember. Winters with -15°C were normal in the 90s, here.

Now, cozy winterjackets are nearly useless, here.

Ah Ft. Drum or "Camp Frostbite" whichever you prefer. Home of the 10th Mountain Division now. When I was at the Ranger School in Wanakena N.Y. I drove by Fort Drum on Route 3 all the time. First time I saw the place I wondered why all the buildings had doors on the 2nd floor. I eventually found out. Fort Drum, Old Forge all those little God forsaken hallows rarely got above zero for any length of time till March. I'm shivering right now thinking of it. Nothing like hearing trees splitting from the cold.

Madison, WI, Jan '71 @ -26 F. My JC Penney (or Sears) N-3B snorkel jacket did the job walking my dog but I was really skinny and had such long arms that to get enough sleeve length we had to get a larger size, a size so wide that two of me could've fit in it. A bit drafty.
A couple of years later I had the snorkel deployed to its full length of eight or more inches as protection during a drunken midnight snowball fight with my buds when a lucky shot caught me right down the tube into my face. We all collapsed in hysterics. I lost my glasses, too, but went back when the snow melted a few weeks later and found them.

Queens NY hasn't had a proper cold spell in a while like we've seen the last week. I think the lowest it got here was 8 degrees one chilly morning.

^ Yeah, I’ve lived in NYC since 2001 and this is the coldest weather I’ve been in here. It reminds me of an Iowa winter minus the snow. It doesn’t look like it’s going to relent soon.

He'd probably be happy to talk about the differences between climate and seasons and the different trends involved. Where I am we've had a lot of moderate Winters recently so I guess we were due for a cold one.
